Can I upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate?

    Hey guys:

I am currently running Windows 7 Pro. I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. I will do it right away if when I do it, Ultimate leaves all my personal software and files in tact from the Pro version.

I have the complete version of Windows Ultimate, not the upgrade version.

    So what do you think?

    Thanks

I think you're capable of doing the upgrade. Plug in the CD and see what options are present.

If you have the complete version, you can do an upgrade install with it .

Follow the tutorial Clean Install Windows 7 . At step 6 , choose "upgrade", not "Custom(Advanced)

I hope you have the necessary serial key to activate ultimate . So go ahead , but dont forget to have an image copy of your Pro installation.

You've certainly heard that a clean install is the preferred method to upgrade. A clean install can keep your files if you don't format the hard disk, in which case you files and folders are transferred to a folder called Windows.old.

However, a clean install does not keep, can not keep your installed software and applications. Only in-place upgrade does that. I've written a short guide to a successful in-place upgrade, you can find it here: A simple guide to a successful in-place upgrade.

Read that guide and come back if you have more questions.

With the clean install, the OS feels fresh and clean. I would advice doing that. All of your old files are moved to "C:\Windows.Old\". You can recover all of your personal files there. (Music, pictures, etc.) But unfortunately, as Kari said, you will need to reinstall all of your programs.

    Hiya pal

I'm curious, why do you want to upgrade from Pro to Ultimate ? Is there really the need as there isn't much difference between the 2.

Perhaps it's because the "Ultimate Version" makes them feel as if it's the best out there. Why would they waste their time comparing when the word says it all.

    It's a guess.

There are users who need Ultimate, I'm one of those. My reason is the ability to use language packs; all my rigs have user accounts in Finnish, Swedish, English and German.

Other reasons could be BitLocker, booting from vhd, WMP media redirection etc.

In start box just do a search for Anytime Upgrade.

Just follow the instructions and you'll be upgraded to Ultimate in just a few minutes (likely a reboot will be needed)

Most of the features are already threre now, you just need to unlock them.
