Unable to drag drop to ZIP and RAR

Not sure if this is just a problem with Win x64 but unable to drag drop to either a ZIP or RAR file under explorer. Can drag and drop normal files to other folders/drives but when trying with a ZIP or RAR all I get is the line thru' the 0 - so a no go.

Have a laptop with Win7 x86 and that works fine with drag drop ZIP and RAR files. When doing that you get a square with a + in the middle.

Obviously something wrong here but I don't really want to go through reinstalling Win 7 and resetting all the programs again.

Any help appreciated. Tried doing a search on the forum and there are a few problems with drag and drop but none of them apply to adding files to a ZIP or RAR file

You are trying to drag a file that is not zip'd or rar'd, onto a .rar or .zip file that contains other files? Meaning you want to add that file into the already created zip or rar? I didn't even know this was possible. Don't you have to re-zip everything if you want to include more that what was already compressed?

You can drop files into existing .zip's and .rar's. The ZIP or RAR program automatically unzips and adds the new file and the "zips" again.

What compression software is it, WinRAR?

Try uninstalling the compression utility, rebooting, and then installing it again; perhaps with the latest version.

No prob. I think I only found out one day when I didn't feel like unzipping dozens of files and adding one or two and zipping again. So I just tried dragging it over.

The only thing is if the ZIP/RAR is really big (100+MB), it takes a long time; especially on the highest compression setting.

Thanks for the replies - have tried uninstalling and reinstalling - rebooting - still no luck. Yes it is WinRAR.

Works fine on my laptop running Win7 x86. Thought it was either an x64 'bug' or maybe a corrupted registry key somewhere

I run it on x64 just fine. Did you install the x86 or x64 version?

Also, can you post a screenshot?

That's maybe where I made the mistake. I installed the WinRAR 32bit version and realised I had the 64 bit version as well. So as I was uninstalling the 32bit we had a power cut. The PC rebooted fine and I then installed the WinRAR 64bit version. Never even got to use the 32 bit version as I was installing Win7 x64 for the first time along with everything else.

Since then I've gone into the registry and deleted all references to WinRAR32.

Attached JPG of the about WinRAR and copy from ShellExView.

WinRAR runs fine if I use the program itself - just the not able to drag and drop which is frustrating.

Thanks for that. Downloaded and installed just fine - did a reboot. Looks like better compression than WinRAR and faster. Sadly still no drag and drop.

The more I think about it I think there must be a corrupted registry key somewhere from un-installing WinRAR 32 bit when the power was cut. No idea where to start with that one though apart from a complete reinstall of Win7. ShellEx shows the Compressed Folder drop handler as being active. JPG Attached.

Have searched everywhere on the internet but it seems as though if you've got normal drag and drop working okay then it should also work with RAR and ZIP files - hence my registry hunch.

So i'll live with what I've got for now. Thanks for all your help everyone.
