Why does my screen go black when I log off Windows?

When I log off a Windows account, my screen goes black for a few seconds and then comes back to normal and takes me to the log on screen. I never really thought about the issue until I saw my friends notebook log off smoothly.

My video card drivers are up to date

That is part of the logging off process and there is nothing wrong. My PC does the same.

So how do you log back in with a black screen?

It only goes blank/black for an instant (maybe 1 second) and then the logon screen pops up.

    RoloDman,

Completely normal. Somewhere I read a technical explanation for this but have long ago forgot where.

In some cases, it is changing the video mode...don't ask me why.
