New internet police to nab French downloaders

Within a few months, Big Brother will be watching your internet habits when you go online in France -- and he might decide to cut you off.
[Thursday update: surprise defeat for Sarko]
This seems sure now that both houses of parliament have approved President Sarkozy's novel scheme for punishing people who habitually grab copyright music, video and films from the web. A new state High Authority (yet another) will run a three-strikes-and-you're-out system against pirates. Illicit downloaders will receive two e-mail warnings. If they persist, the service provider will be ordered to cut access to the net for the offenders (and their families) for up to a year.

If downloading copyrighted material is being done by one third of the citizens, then creating this law would likely results in the next election defeat of many in the house and parliament, including Sarko. Are they that greedy for money from the recordings industry? This is not a good example to used anywhere. It's political suicide.

Like the users said on clubic.com (they followed the whole thing), the law is already absolete. There are ways to share illegal data without using P2P :
- VPNs
- mIRC
- Direct downloads

And, if they really want to be sure to have a succesful illegal download, used protected RAR archives :D

Also, I want to point that each Internet customer will have to install a spyware on their computer to be monitored. Anyone with a brain will not install it.

Why side with Sarkozy? Think about the privacy being taken from you to monitor this. Are they logging your IP and its activities? The amount of government power given to do this disturbs me a little bit...

Well, they only log your IP if your someone who visits Limewire's site, It's just like NSA's wiretaping program, they only wiretap you if your talking to someone from Iran or simler. It is illegal to steal music CD's , then why do you think it's okay to steal music files.

Wouldn't think twice about stealing a music CD. Only time a band deserves money from me is at a concert. Their CDs are just advertising as far as I'm concerned.

Bottom line: Charging for intellectual property is a crime...

"Intellectual property rights are considered by economists to be a form of temporary monopoly enforced by the state...."

Monopoly forced by the state?! Sounds like the hand of socialism. Convenient since it gives the government more power to pry into your affairs.

Who told you that, the TPB CEO. Bottom line it's stealing. Can someone tell me when stealing became socially acceptble.

Careful how you say this.... (Not stating an opinion, just saying).

I prefer to play an Arbiter, or Devil's advocate in debates like this, so I will not state my opinion on it.

I will say this: Nobody really likes paying their hard earned money for things, and everyone loves free things.
BY LAW: Pirating is ILLEGAL. SHARING (in this case!) is considered by most to be Pirating.

As for you 12eason, you are in there with the Linux crowd. They have their perks, but it is just not widespread. Might be better for the human race in the long run, but its not going to happen right now.

not fast enough
Several things to note:

Bands deserve my money - if they spent their own hard earned money making their CD and marketing it themselves.

If *anyone* affiliated with the **AAs is involved, F'em. I ain't buying squat.

Also, I have acquired things in the past, but now it is mostly legit for me - I have found several pieces of software that I cannot live without and I have bought them (DisplayFusion, Vista, WinRAR, etc.) and I have to say that I am happy being able to buy stuff that I used to not buy before.

but if the **AAs get involved, I'll revert faster than a lightning strike. I despise jackasses that are screaming bloody murder b/c their profits are being hurt b/c they were too friggin stupid to realize that the Internet was a great tool and not just some fad. Boo hoo, go cry a ****ing river somewhere else, cause I ain't go no cheese to accompany your whine.

Now, on to IP: While on the one hand I hate that you an be sued over IP, I have to say that I do think it is fair that IP suits brought on by the original composer/writer/developer are fair - but that IP should in no way be allowed to be transferred at all. As soon as it is 'sold' it is 'null and void' in my eyes.

I think you're entirely backward on what you just wrote - this is a debate b/c of the very fact that none of us mods / admins have censored it.

If it were trolling we'd have brought the hammer down already, don't you think?

Er, so what if you've let the comments stand (even though you didn't on the previous occasion). If I'm going to get a warning every time I express a dissenting opinion, clearly any 'debate' if going to be very one-sided.

I can well understand you not wanting links to illegal content. I can even just about fathom you not wanting discussions about illegal activities. But if you're going to do that, it's a bit off to first allow the discussion, then give only one side of the discussion infractions for rules violations.

If you were consistent you'd lock the thread and warn the OP.
