Anyone playing with the new Western Digital SATA 6 Caviar Black HD (64meg Cache)???

I bought one the other day loaded Windows on it and it thrashes like crazy. My older SATA Blacks (32meg) are quiet as church mice. I read somewhere that this might be normal??? I find that hard to believe but...

Thoughts???

Thanks.

First, allow me to clarify one point: The Wester Digital Black Caviar WDC WD1002FAEX-00Y9A0 its NOT a SATA 6 and is NOT a SATA 3 its a SATA III-6Gb/s 1Tb(64Mb) drive, after this technicality, I am a proud owner of one of these drives, and so far i am pleased with it, its a bit noisy yes, but only if you have the case open, other than that it performs well on my Win7 ultimate x64 it didnt show much improvment from my other two Samsung HD103UJ SATA II-3Gb/s 1Tb(32Mb) drives, Windows gives me a Base performance of 5.9
Processor 7.4
Memory 7.4
Graphics 7.4
3D Graph 7.4
Main HD 5.9

The Samsung Samsung HD103UJ SATA II-3Gb/s 1Tb(32Mb) gave me 5.4, so wasnt much better.

I have one too, but have not noticed any noise from it. If you are concerned, go to the western digital site and download their drive test program - I believe it is called windig. My wei score is 5.9 too. Of course I had a 5.9 on my dell with a 320GB WD green SATA II-3Gb/s. (Hope I got that right naoboss ).

I haven't used a caviar black recently but the HDDs in my box are based on them, and they definitely make a unique sound, but two of them in RAID 0 give most SSDs a run for the money.

From my review.... Amazon.com: A review of Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Desktop ...

BTW this is a replacement drive as I thought the first drive was faulty due to the same noise. With that I called Western Digital about this issue.... and to make a long story short, they say this is normal and that [the] drive wasn't designed with noise in mind, that if you want a "quieter" drive, get the Caviar Blue.

Make of that what you will....

This drive thrashes a lot, especially compared to the older generation Caviar Blacks.

Take these drives and compare them to the older caviar blacks and the older ones will be quieter. I hear no noises during heavy tasks coming from my older blacks, yet these new ones sound like coffee pots peculating.

For me, I decided to go with my older Caviar Black as it's much quieter, and use the 64meg one for an external backup.

My system is much quieter now as I don't have to deal with the peculator :D

BTW.....

I've been using Western Digital hard drives since getting into computers in 1998. In fact I've never owned anything but WD hard drives (from 4.3gig to 1TB). In all my years of using them I've only had 2 go bad, though they never "completely" failed. This speaks of Western Digital's consistency in reliability.

Just in case ;)

I suggest you all check this link related to the hard drives we are talking about.
Charts, benchmarks 2009 3.5

the WD1002FAEX we are talking about here, is not in the chart yet, as the chart is from 2009 Desktop HD's
but I guess it will perform under the WD RE4 drive. :p

... In fact the Caviar Black WD2001FASS in the charts is a 2TB SATAII/3Gb/s
so far it seems there is no WD drives above 1Tb with SATAIII-6Gb/s
one with 1Tb (Model:WD1002FAEX) and another with 640Gb (Model: WD6402AAEX)

BTW This is the question being asked…
Anyone playing with the new Western Digital SATA 6 Caviar Black HD (64meg Cache)???

Thanks.

I clarified my question with this....
Yes. Guess I need to change the title to SATA 6, instead of 3. At any rate...

$145 (OEM) At Micro Center. However - 99.99 @ Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive So :(

Seems like I'll have to return mine. Unfortunately I live 2.5 hours from the Micro Center store near DC, so it's not a down the block trip :(

Note the drive in the link. That's the drive I'm talking about ;)

Thank you.

That's the point I'm making. Simply put, during large read/writes this thing is loud compared to the older blacks.

I can take anyone of my older blacks and sit it next to me, put the new one in my PC which sits on the floor of my workstation (case closed), and it WILL be louder then the one sitting next to me that's not in a case.

That's the point.

ive never had an older caviar black, but the point i was trying to make is that in order to hear my hard drive i have to crawl under my desk.. sure it may be louder if next to another drive, but its not loud enough for me to hear it outside of my case unless i try to

My suggestion was to check the Charts link, (you will find some charts related to SOUND LEVEL compare drives.)

Bottom line: Youre right its a noisy drive to now-a-days standards, but I'm sure you didnt experienced the sound of a 10Mb Hard Disk on a desktop computer running a blazing fast intel 386SX with huge 64Kb Ram.
