Windows 7 Starter Edition - Is It Really That Bad?

edit: my bad, it's Win7 Home Premium that's gonna be in netbooks.
Starter edition is aimed at the developing countries, and I realized that there are Windows XP and Vista Starter Edition too.

Alright, I think that this is getting a little ridiculous.

Starter Edition is going to come out, like it or not. Stop complaining about how much it sucks, because you are never going to use it.

This version, as stated above, is aimed at OLDER computers. Computers that would STRUGGLE to run home premium. The point of it is to provide a new OS for computers that are stuck in the 98 days. And to get M$ more money.

If you really have a problem with this, then send a complaint to M$. Just know that they WILL ignore you, and I fully support them in that. Most of you will probably never even see a copy of this EVER. And NONE of you would ever buy it. Me included (I happen to like Ultimate).

For those of you that think M$ should make this free simply because it seems ridiculous to you, think about it. There are MANY people who would NEVER use more than 3 apps at once. Think about elderly people like my grandma. She doesn't know how to use a computer... Or my other grandparents who use it exclusively for e-mail. One app, no problem. IT WORKS.

I apologize for my rant, but this thread just got out of freaking hand.

I am glad I tried it on my Acer One netbook. No problem with only 3 progs.
It is no longer on the machine because it is NOT allowed to be a device on my Windows Home Server. Now have Home Premium and the server and I are happy.
I expect that restriction will not be on the retail package. Saved me from buying a coaster. 8>)
Have to try before you buy.

Well many of us here will be using the Ultimate versions of Windows 7 RC build

but what about other lite versions

The Cheapest version of Windows 7 (Starter Edition) has a limitation that it can't run more than three application at a time!!!

I tried Starter Edition to see for myself what the fuss was about. Having tried it out I wouldn't want it on my netbook, but that's not to say others wouldn't.

Netbooks are catching up to desktop replacement notebooks in terms of processing power and resources. Except for the screen size, which pretty much defines a notebook.

Get the next step up and opt for Home Basic, with no limit on the number of programs you can run.

I think that if you did land a copy of starter, than you might be able to delete a specific registry key or program that disables running more than 3 programs.

If you don't like it, then don't buy it. That's my advice to everyone here

She'll have the resolution set at 320x240

/XP SP1 had this resolution.

i am still woundering who in there right mind would spend there hard earn money on a tease of the windows 7 os... An average user has 4 windows open at a time. or atleast 4 apps running in the background... Can u say useless??? cause this is exactly what there selling... I bet u there is going to be a hack to get around this restriction thing that Microsoft has put on the OS... Or just alot of attempts

Why is this such a big deal? If you don't like it, don't buy it. It is M$ problem if they decide to lose their money...

I personally would not even consider Starter edition; hey good old Windows XP Home Basic is the equal too or more than Starter edition.

Sure, in Starter edition, you get the "Libraries" to organize your files.

In Starter edition, you have limited customization.

In Starter, you have the Aero Basic UI. Lots of screen tearing.

Windows XP also has lower hardware requirements than Starter.

i could see it as a literal 'starter' edition for kids, like 6-7 yr-olds, who are jusst learning how to use a computer. that and the tiny lappy would be good for them to, i suppose *shrug*

Microsoft is clearly trying to sell Starter edition, and Home Basic, on the grounds of security (UAC) and file organization (Libraries and Instant Search). Not worth upgrading to.

Did you know UAC actually stands for Unconventional and Annoying Crap?

UAC has improved greatly, however upgrading to Starter just doesn't appeal to me, or most other people. If it does, please speak up.

Maybe if it can preinstalled on a netbook, I would keep it for the lack of an optical drive (to install XP).
