What sort of files do you have on your system? It sounds like you may have a large number of small files.

1,000 files of 1K each take up a lot more room than a 1 mb file, even though they both would be listed as 1MB of file size.

baraka607:

Are you using Hibernation?
If not, that can be huge.
Check the root directory of you system drive for a file called hiberfil.sys
There are ways to disable Hibernation and get rid of that file if you want.
Here's what you'll have to do:

Step 1.

  • Go to Start menu, type 'power', choose Change Power-Saving Settings
  • In the window that opens, choose Change Plan Settings
  • In the window that opens, choose Change Advanced Power Settings
  • In the window that opens, find the Hibernate option in the list and disable it
  • Be certain to click the APPLY button.
  • 'OK' your way out of all these windows

Step 2.

  • Go to Start menu, type 'cmd' to open up a command prompt
  • Type 'powercfg.exe -h off' (no quotes and make sure you are Administrator (you'll see it in the Title Bar of the command window))
  • Hit <ENTER>
  • Type 'exit'
  • Hit <ENTER>
Re-boot your computer and check that hiberfil.sys is no longer taking up a large chunk of drive space.

It's unusual to have that much space taken, that isn't Windows stuff and not anything you know of. Try using one of the system cleaners mentioned above. Or really dig deep and check file sizes.

Look in your User folders to see what's in each.

If nothing is obvious after going through each, unhide Hidden files in Control Panel>Folder Options>view tab to check size of AppData folders. Delete temporary files in each.

Do you have any kind of Desktop Search installed?
(I had Google Desktop and it created 5GB of index files)

WinDirStat and TreeSize will pinpoint both the files used and their location. Please post those here for identification.

We have a lot of problems here with tweaking suites like TuneUp Utilities. Win7 is already so lean and optimized that tweaking outside of normal system settings almost always comes back to bite you.

The only cleaner I would use on Win7 is the CCleaner, which is perhaps the most highly regarded app in all of the tech world. http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

I have also used free Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers for over 10 years with excellent results. Others here like Defraggler which is made by the same company which makes CCleaner.

I also use CCleaner and Glary Utilities. Been using Tuneup since 07 and have never had a problem with it.

Spot on advice Greg. Do not use a tuneup utility on Win 7. At best a tuneup utility simply uses resources; at worst it will corrupt a system for which the cure in a reinstall of Win 7. Tuneup utilities are pure snake oil with Win 7, of no use whatsoever.

System Restore

I had the same problem tonight. (This never happened to me before). I tried disabling hibernation but that only freed 13 of the 100GB the laptop is telling me are full.

It occurred to me system restore could be at fault. I checked the system restore options (Go to start, type "restore point" and click on "create a restore point", then click on configure) and it was set pretty much unrestricted at 99% of my hard drive capacity. I decreased it to 30% and it warned me some old restore points would be deleted to accommodate my new size restriction. I said ok and voila! Now 60% of my hard drive is free. Though this might help somebody.
