For the nth time, they keep saying the PC is dead.

The PC may not die but it is obviously changing shape and form and as well the traditional PC is taking a serious back seat. If you look at the development cycle of Intel there priority is ARM chips not so much in enhancing multi-core CPU. ARM chips being in almost all devices, from netbooks to mobile phones. There was a point when desktops were king, then came laptops, now it's netbooks / mobile devices. I think economics play a role as well. In most of the world people want to be connected but don't have the income, how would WinTel make revenue if they kept selling $2K laptops, they wouldn't which is why there is a serious decline in laptops of that price range selling. Obviously doing any serious number crunching work is not going to work on a mobile phone or network, but internet will and that is their (whoever their is) whole point getting most people connected, what that leads too is unsure because it brings up serious questions, if you take down the grid you cut off communication and we as a society have become so dependent on our mobile devices and the net including myself that you have to wonder is this all another form of a drug ?

Google, Apple, Microsoft, Intel are the main market players they manipulate the masses, they control government, they are part of a dozen who control government. Just think Facebook, Twitter store everything you write what if that is used against you ? Your bank information is online, mine isn't but if "someone" wanted to find out who you are unless you have kept a tight lid on the information you post online, they can from how much money you spend per day to where you shop, to your favorite music. Is that a good thing ? I'm becoming more skeptical the older generation find this technology amazing, the older generation being 50+ yrs of age I don't think the young or the old or many for that matter know the ramifications of all this there will be consequences, how can their not be Google runs the Internet, one company runs the internet, one company digest for a minute. The internet is suppose to be an open freedom of speech medium but the government does want to change this, as they have in china. Close it up even more and that is easy when one or two companies controlling the internet. The net is still is free as in freedom of speech but will it last ?

Well I certainly don't want to part with my PC for something that's mobile, I'm not so why do I need a gadget that is.

I have no need for a Smartphone so that's one out the way, I may not be into the game set but it doesn't mean I don't need something substantial to be able to type out my messages on or a monitor that I can actually see instead of some tiny screen that I know wouldn't accommodate my Excel spreadsheets or be able to design with my cross stitch program.

I want my information in my possession to see and use whenever I want and that means I don't always want to be connected to the Internet for certain things so if it was all in the Cloud I'd be screwed.

It would be the same for my husband, he has trouble using a mobile phone, the keys are too small for him, so he'd have no chance trying to use a tablet or smartphone or even a laptop.

Haha I know... and now my parents and some friends are all asking me about it becuase theyheard on the news that the PC is dead :P

Well maybe a tablet or phone can replace a PC for those very few people that never really knew what to do with one anyway, but nearly EVERYTHING I use a PC for is just PAINFUL or completely imossible on any mobile device now and for any forseeable future.

Well the richest person in the world is rich selling OS for PC and there is no stopping.
Smartphone is nothing but a free time gadget.
Even my 1Ghz smartphone processor gets hanged if i try to use more than two application at a time.
Smartphones or tablets are useless and they are only made to surf the net and watch the videos.
This is the most stupid thing i am hearing nowdays PC are dead.
If PC are dead than what will replace PC in companies developing game ,software ,special effects used in movies.
Are these people imagining developing games like crysis on tablets.

Well PC are there and will be there.
Nothing in present and future world can replace PC.
They are there to stay in our desk.

I'd love to see some sort of study discussing the difference in power consumption between your data on a cloud server and having it stored at home. Energy isn't getting any cheaper or any easier to find.

There are DATA Centers that run completely on wind power, so as long as the wind blows there will be power to run the data center.
the majority of US households run on fossil fuels.

Having remote access to your data on your home PC requires your home PC to be running while you are away from it, basically wasting power.

If you are running your machine at home as a server then yes, the cloud would be more energy efficient. But if you are talking about just USING your computer at home, then the cloud idea is VERY electricity wasteful.

And funny about the iCloud name. I don't understand why companies (Apple in this case) wait to trademark their names AFTER their announcements. This isn't the first time that's been a big problem. Course in reality, the iCloud company would not have ever named their service "iCloud" if it weren't for Apple giving them the "i*" moniker to ape on so... although the iCloud company is in the right, it's a tad distasteful that they essentially pre-stole the name :/

That is the problem, fossil fuels go out everyone has not power while major servers will keep running. How come people are against wind and solar electricity despite the fact they do work and can power everyones home the same way fossil fuels but when the debate surfaces and Party A wants to build for example wind power turbines everyone screams 'NOOOOOOOOO' Fossil Fuels won't go away they will last as long as our Grand parents another 80 yrs PHFFF yeah right.

Lets store our entire digital lives on a cloud, so we can access it from anywhere.

2 things wrong.

When the weather changes, clouds disappear.
When companies go bust or are bought out, where is and who owns our data?

If someone can access their data from anywhere, so can someone else.

If you want your data secure, put it on your PC.
If you want your data REALLY secure, put it on your PC, turn your PC off, disconnect your harddrive, bury it in a block of reinforced concrete.

Calm down, everyone. Are the PR releases of an industry that has to expand or die, really relevant? Those who can afford it, will always buy the Latest Thing. Those of us who like to use "Big Boxes" will continue to do so. If a privileged few keep buying the latest high-end stuff, does that not bring down prices of the mainstream stuff for the rest of us? Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice...
To me, at least 50% of the pleasure in using a computer (of whatever form) lies in the fact that I have built it (and sworn at it!) myself. To others, it may be a different experience. We are all individuals, are we not?

Like my guns, they can pry my PC from my cold dead fingers. It will be a cold day in (you know where) before I give up the desktop experience for some dumb terminal or a little useless tablet that has no real processing power. The software as a service model will fail (who would pay an annual fee) when the current model allows you to use software indefinitely. I as a beta tester for a well known Image editing product, will not give up my current version of the software for the lack of a better phrase an abortion of a program which is to be the next release. This decision would be hard to make if the software was cloud based and forced upon you under no control of your own. Why re-invent the wheel when it is rolling along nicely?

They seem to forget when making these claims that there are still companies running legacy software from decades back which perform the job at hand and would be too costly to update to a newer system.

I think that eventually sales and use of the stand alone "box" part of the PC along with the keyboard will significantly decline in new PCs.

If small tablets already can do what they can than it is not hard to imagine that all of that power and more could be put into a larger screen which will in effect become the PC of the future. It may take 10 - 20 more years but that is what I think will happen.

I do not see a long term decline in the use of larger sized monitors which IMO will eventually include the motherboard. HDD etc along with voice recognition and touch screen technology.

Basically a full sized tablet.

I,Hate to say it but most of those Handheld devices are for people who have something to prove to whomever is around them

seriously do you have to take pics showing off every destination ?

Most people have no knowledge about a PC and care not to learn ,but when it comes to little do dad's and such they are fascinated and want to learn it quickly

It takes as much time to learn PC as it would a tablet smart phone everything can be simplified if given direction

Basicly people are lazy and always prefer a shortcut to doing the real thing and when they need to make use of how to use Pc there going to reflect wondering where they were the day that class was tought
