Remote Desktop "Credentials Did Not Work"

Hey Everybody,

I am a Graphic Designer with a company and I am having a problem using VPN and Remote Desktop to access my work computer from home. My Fiance will be having our baby in the next couple of weeks and I need to have access to my machine while I am out of the office.

I use VPN and connect fine to that. I start up remote desktop and type in the address of my work computer 10.1.x.xx. I then asks me to log on using my existing credentials or a new one. I have tried this two ways. I have tried using a new one with my work log on Bxxxx Lxxxxxx and password Bxxxxxxxxxx and I get the error Credentials Did Not Work". I have also created a new administrator account on my home computer with the same user name and password as my work machine...same problem. I know that the user name and credentials are correct and I have tried this about 50 times each.

All settings are correct on my machines as far as I can tell. I have allowed connections to anyone on my work computer and allowed the computer to be controlled remotely. I am at my wits ends with this.

Any help you can provide would be great.

System setup (Home):

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
All updates installed
Remote connection allowed through all firewalls
Administrator account

System setup (Work):

Windows 7 Professional x64
All updates installed
Administrator account

What security software do you have installed on your home and work computer?

When you login, instead of using:

Login:Bxxxx Lxxxxxx
Password: Bxxxxxxxxxx

Can you try it by inserting the domain name of the work computer you are trying to connect to. For example:

Login:Bxxxx Lxxxxxx@MyWork <----replace "MyWork" with the domain name or computer name of your work computer
Password: Bxxxxxxxxxx

What security software do you have installed on your home and work computer?

I currently have Windows Firewall, BitDefender and Comodo Firewall running on my home machine. Like I said, I have allowed Remote Desktop through each of these manually on my home machine. As for the work computer, it is just Windows Firewall.

I'd uninstall everything except what comes standard with Windows 7, then install Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus. Then, make sure you are supplying the credentials in the proper format required by the host machine.

Well this doesn't work for me. I log onto my network at work with VPN. I can ping the Win2008 server at 192.168.1.9. But when I try to remote desktop to 192.168.1.9 or to <servername> using Administrator@<servername> or ...@<servername.domain.com>, it doesn't accept the credential. Nor does it work when I do [email protected]. There is no domain in the LAN. When I'm in the office I can remote desktop to the server without any problem. And with VPN I'm supposed to be just another computer in the office LAN. (And my home subnet is 192.168.2....)
Part of what I don't understand is why the "Windows Security/Enter your credentials" screen comes up at all. It never does any other time I try to use Remote Access, whether with other servers that have public IP addresses or with computers on the same LAN that I'm on.
I just successfully logged into a different computer there (Win 7) using my name and password to log on ([email protected]).

I can actually VPN to the office, use Remote Access to get into my SysMgr box, and use the Remote Access link there to get to the server at 192.168.1.9. So why can't I log onto it directly? What kind of stupid Window gotcha is working here?

Still more interesting: I had the sysmgr box out of the office and was able to vpn into the office and connect to the 192.168.1.9 server without any problem. Why would it work ok with one Win 7 professional box but not with another?

I think it's something about win 2008. Not only can I vpn+remote desktop into my box, I can do it to another Win 7 box and to a win 2003 server on the LAN. So what's the secret for the Win 2008 server? We can remote desktop to it with no problem from local boxes but not when we have VPN'd in.

I'm sure lots of these things are different between Win 2008 on the one hand and Win 2003 and Win 7 on the other. What I need is help in identifying what's keeping the Win2008 from accepting a logon from a box that is a VPN'd member of the LAN. Surely I'm not the only one ever to have to do this. I don't have "fully functional" Win 2008 to compare with.

Are there security, application or system logs that match the failed login attempts? It sounds like a remote desktop config on the server or the GPO the server resides in.
