Solved How often should I create a system repair disc?

Hello,

I have created a system repair disc for both of my PCs. I also create system backups on a regular basis.

Should I also create system repair disc on a regular basis?

I have recently changed the drive letter of several of my external hard drives, whould this require a new repair disc to be created?

I generally just set up the system make sure everything is as I want it and stable then make a repair disc.
If you are installing a lot of applications and removing them frequently I would say base it on that use.
The best repair is a return to that fresh install + setup state.


...and the computer doesn't see drive letters what it sees are hardware locations like
drive 0 partition 1
so as long as the drives are physically plugged into the same place on the motherboard nothing should change.

A system repair disc only needs to be created once.

A system repair disc is not a system image disc(s).

If you have repartitioned your drive, then a new System Image created using Windows Backup and Restore is definitely to be performed.

You say, you have two PC's, if you have one 32bit & one 64bit, one of each would be needed.

I was told that a pre SP1 repair disk will not work after SP1. A repair disk needs to be created after installing SP1.

Now if you have a pre-sp1 system repair disc and a sp1 system, you could test.

I did test and it didn't work. I made a new one and it worked perfect. Suprised me!

I can't think why - but that doesn't mean that much.
Is SP1 more than a consolidation of updates/fixes?

I'll play safe and update my system repair disks & USB ISOs.

Well, it would work, but you'd be pre-SP1 again and have to reinstall. If your system is working properly (check to be sure, including the event log and reliability monitor) after a major upgrade like a service pack, you should indeed create a new recovery disc and archive the old one somewhere just in case.

A system repair disc does NOT EQUAL a system recovery disc.

Before I changed this laptop to 64 bit, I used the pre-sp1 32 bit repair disc after installing the 32 bit sp1. As said since then I've installed the 64bit with sp1 on the laptop.

Those who download the ISO from say neosmart will need to be carefull.

I assume we are all talking System Repair Disk based around a Winre environment. This is stored away in your OS partition.

This link Windows 7 - Service Pack 1 System Repair Disc says definitely create a new repair disk after installing SP1. I will do it as soon as I get more blank DVDs .
