Gary, it is Nick's workspace ... which makes the life with CorelDraw much more easy . Haven't you applied it ?

#1 is the shaping of the corner ...from a round corner,scalloped or chamfered corner
#2 is where you can shape any corner by increasing or decreasing the x and y axis.

Not sure you have these options with CS5 but I do in Corel Draw GS 5X

No, I do not have those options in PSE, and GIMP does not offer any shapes at all (just square and ellipse).

The other day I made myself a sig for VF, but as you can see the edges on the rounded bits are a bit jagged

I'm using Photoshop Extended CS5 and anti-aliasing was on, but I can't figure out why the round bits are like that, any ideas?

Try making your image at 1300x300 then resize it to 650x150 and save. Or start with double the size of the end product.

Dennis, I don't do it that way and I'm unaware of those features in Photoshop. What I do is make a rectangle (layer 1), duplicate the layer (layer 2), smooth the edges of layer 2 by say 50px, select layer 1, delete an chunk off two opposite corners to expose the layer behind, flatten the image.

It's kind of a bodge job really But it does the trick

Tom, I dont have any formal training in graphics .... still I am telling what I do , and those rough corners dont appear .

You are making a shape and work in it ..... after making the shape, ctrl+click on the shape to select the pixels of the shape, create a new layer, fill the new layer with paint bucket tool . Now hide the original shape , and work on the new layer which is an identical copy of the shape layer but doesn't have a shape path to make it look jagged .

If you find this method is childish, please dont laugh at me ... I am saying that I have no formal training .... so my methods are not formal. But it works .

Hi Archie,

For copying the layer the method is excellent, and one doesn't lose the shape either In GIMP, for example, it seems to be impossible to copy shapes via ctrl+click or any other way. But...well, the jagged edges still remain, copying the layer shape also copies the exact shape outline.

Athene, Ctrl+click selects an object in photoshop or elements . For making rounded rectangles, use the keyboard command "U" for adobes products , and choose the rounded rectangular tool. But it makes a mask in the paths pallet , which cause the creepy corners . So I tried to avoid the mask .

Ctrl+click on the mask in layers pallet will select (not copy) the shape . now create a new layer and fill the selection with color .... which will make an exact copy of the shape, but not the mask .

If you work on it, it will be free from this unwanted things .

Well, tomorrow I will try to make a detailed post on it, step by step .

In the meantime, I'm just posting a few screenshots of what I've been doing in Photoshop Elements (version 5 in the screenshots - I've got the latest version 9 on the other computer, but the results are the same with regard to the jagged edges). First, since I do not have rounded-corner-rectangular-selection tool, I have to use a shape tool. So I use that and then I simplify it (image 1).

In image 2, I create a new layer, select the black shape but with the new layer highlighted, and then, in image 3, fill the new layer with blue. And...well, in image 4 (with the black shape hidden) you can see those edges.

Now that I'm a Gold Member, my purple avatar no longer matches my name. I'm currently using the yellow one made by Dennis. If possible, could you make one exactly the same as my old one (see picture below) but with a gold eye/rose. The closer to the Gold Member colour, the better.
