Tom, do not stay up late and slog away at the sig hour after hour, otherwise I'm going to have one very bad conscience
In the meantime, I can say the following about the graphics editing/manipulating programs I've tried out so far:
-I find Corel Paint Shop Pro X4 really difficult to handle. Applying one's own gradient is complicated, and there does not seem to be a ctrl+click command to simply load a layer object or shape like in Adobe Photoshop (corresponds to right-clicking on a layer and choosing "Alpha to Selection" in GIMP).
-GIMP is brilliant once one is used to the user interface. Some filters still need a bit of sophistication, though (Pagecurl, for instance), and there do not seem to be many preset shapes or bevels.
-Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (10 was just released, by the way) is my favourite besides GIMP.
So using the combination of PSE9 and GIMP, I'm perfectly happy
