Hi ALL

Just Curious in whether a lot of the W7 community have tried W8 at all.

Eight Forums

I really like W7 but I've also been incredibly surprised at how stable and fast W8 is too -- It's primarily based on W7 but it is a bit different.

To me it's amazing that W7 has evolved into something that could be used as a competitor to Android on mobile devices / tablets while still retaining features that are still needed on a PC using a "Classical OS".

Ms is going down the right road imo.

Cheers
jimbo

i have it ,but i dont use it often, as win 7 does everything i need it to. i dont like the explorer ribbon, i like a context menu, the fact you have to select a tab to see which parts of the ribbon features you see is annoying ,rather than a context menu that has it all in one long list.

not keen on the metro start page. not a lot of point unless you have a touch screen. i dont.

however it is nice having a new system to play with occasionally, but im sticking with lucky number 7.

Same here. I don't care what they want to put in Windows Phone, but my computer is not a phone.

The trend industry-wide seems to be to put the phone interface on desktop computers. IMHO, this is idiotic. I will not be rushing to Windows 8. :p

I tend to agree with the above, I don't like the metro interface. Not on a PC with no touch screen anyway. I ran it on a laptop for a couple of days and found it an exercise in frustration. I'm posting this from that same laptop now running Windows 7. :) Windows 8 is only an early alpha build so a lot could change between now and RTM, or even the beta release. I'll probably give the beta release a look see when it comes out. Until then though Windows 7 suits me just fine.

I downloaded and installed it as soon as it came out. As far as the Metro, if I wanted an iphone, I would buy one. It may be great for some but not for me. After getting rid of that, I think it is good. Much like windows 7 but a little different and faster. Although i Have not used it that much, I am rather fond of it and find it quite usable. While this is just a developer preview, I think this is a good start and a good base to build on. That's my opinion.

Metro UI is not that good, especially when you don't have a touch screen. Like essenbe said, it runs very smooth and is very stable for a beta release. One thing to note, Ribbon UI has made its way to everything including windows explorer. That said, I think they will lose a significant chunk of the business market because of the UI changes.

I installed it on an extra machine I use as a test bed so I haven't used it for any real work, just for playing around. I have to agree with the other posts here; the ribbon seems like a step backwards and I can't see how it would ever make things more efficient. The start interface could be a step in the right direction for a mobile device, but it's just eye candy that seems to get in the way on a non-touchscreen desktop.

I make a living creating audio media on my machines, and the thought of doing real work in the environment I have seen so far makes me sick to my stomach. I've decided to stop thinking about it. Put me down as another user sticking with 7 for a while longer.

This is my recording studio PC. I also have a gaming rig, a HTPC, an old dual-core system I set up as a server, and a few old dinosaurs (the oldest is an Intel P-90) that I use for DOS and Win95 gaming when I feel nostalgic.

Installed but soon removed the Metro interface. I use the standard desktop, with the standard (Windows 7), menu. It is identical to Windows 7 in all functions. Why bother? Well, there is a slightly improved performance issue all round, which is worth experimenting with. I use the OS a good deal, and have installed a lot of my software without problems. I will probably keep it running until, at least, the Beta pops up, as a dual boot..

I have not installed the preview myself for Windows 7 does everything I want it to do. However, there are a couple of issues with Windows 7 that the next system can improve. Mostly that's the file transfer speeds and the annoying "discovering items" situation. The folks at the Windows 8 Forums (well, same people as here, basically :) ), tell me that it's a bit faster. I think I will give the beta a try. However, if it does not perform faster than Windows 7 does, I will not be upgrading. The UI is not the point of the OS, imho. The performance is.

Clearly it's early, but it just seems like Microsoft took the regular desktop...then took a touch centric UI design (Metro) and just forced them together. In it's present incarnation, it just doesn't feel integrated, but rather clunky and awkward. The fact that I cannot seem to find any way to actually shut down a running application that I launched from the Metro GUI is just frustrating. For example, everytime I hit "Ink Pad", it just brings up what it suspended from before. I DO NOT NEED all running apps suspended until next use. I want to close them, stop them, put them away, not let them consume any type of resources...albeit very small amounts. And the fact that I cannot actually get multiple applications running on the same desktop and sized "the way I want", not however metro feels it should be done is just aggravating.

If Windows 8 looks anything like it does today at release, I won't feel any reason whatsoever to move to it. And I haven't taken the time to open an 8 forums account either because I have next to no interest to even talk about this new OS. A thread like this, here or there, is really all I can take.
