Well, while that may work, you can fry all of your components with static discharge. Some ways to prevent it would be to do it in your undies, on a wooden floor, the components resting on a rubber mat, and every time you go to enter the chassis you need to ground yourself and discharge any static you may have.

It looks like your HP motherboard is microATX, 9.6" (24.4 cm) square. The motherboard you've picked out is standard ATX, 12 X 9.6 " (30.5 X 24.2 cm). Will the new board fit in your existing case? If not, there are microATX Z68 boards available, like:

If you listed your HP model, you might get more accurate advice. You may be taking a bit of a chance in attempting to swap motherboards with an appliance PC. It may be OK, but I worry that HP has used some proprietary features that'll complicate the job. (I'm biased. I haven't bought a prebuilt PC since 1995.)

Hi Paronomasia,

First off, I'd like to suggest you watch these video's before attempting your first computer upgrade.

From the Speecy report, it appears you possibly have an HP machine. (As Bob suggested earlier). Start with posting the model number of your HP computer. This way we can figure out if your motherboard is a mini ATX. Your case is probably a mini tower and may not fit the larger ATX type motherboard.

Do you a series of long PCI slots, perhaps as many as 7?

You need to find out if that case will accept an ATX motherboard.

If not, a chainsaw won't help you.

You could just assemble it on a piece of plywood if that is your inclination.

I'm assuming you don't have your original purchase receipt or documents.

well i guess maybe i can start out with 500 then maybe get an extra 100 in a 3 weeks or so but for now what would i need? i want the twin frozr iii (or better for the same price) the motherboard with 6 ram slots (or more) so i can fit more 4gb ram chips and the psu, but can i just buy the motherboard itself then in a few weeks buy the psu and graphics card? also in the combo deal, will the mobo and gfx card work together with the psu?

And, to answer this best, the motherboard is the backbone for any build. My best advice is to first figure out if the case your current PC is in will be worth hanging on to. Just hold down the control and Alt together. Now press "S"

This will show the model number. Don't worry about the other information there. Just give the model number.

I'm sure the Mobo is a Mini ATX.

K I took apart the computer and measured the motherboard and i'd say it's about 9.5 to 10 inches on both sides

If the motherboard is square, as yours is, it is NOT an ATX motherboard. ATX is closer to 13 by 10, taller than it is wide.

It is possible, but unlikely, that your case will take an ATX motherboard. No one can tell unless we know your exact HP model number or have an interior picture of the case or something like that.

9.5 or 10 inches square is mATX (micro ATX) size. If you want a new motherboard, you should probably be shopping for micro ATX.

But as Bobkn said, HP cases might be a bit peculiar and not be compatible with a replacement motherboard, even if it is micro ATX.

The model listed definitely uses a mircroATX motherboard. The case is classified as a mid ATX, but looking inside, it doesn't look like an ATX motherboard will fit.
