Problem with validation

Have posted before re an old machine that I have installed my friends Vista onto and all had gone well - updates service pack 2 et etc until today when it pops up a message that it is not a genuine OS.

Now I know it is as it was originally on another machine of hers that I put 7 on. This machine I wanted to give to her daughter to stop her mucking up the one with 7 as ha happened i the past.

I contacted Microsoft and to cut a long story short the tech told me the was no security on the machine - Comodo is and he suggested I put MSE on it - and that there were many reg errors. He offered to fix these for me and I thought great until he announced that it was going to cost $149 to do it plus an ongoing fee to keep the machine going.

Now I am hopping mad not because I am trying to get it on this other machine so much that the OS was paid for and what would have happened if the HDD died and it needed reinstalling on a new one?

In any case I need to know if there are any reliable and safe reg cleaners or rectifiers out here that I can use.

The install took me a good two days to do and if this is how M$ treat customers then I have a good mind to install Unbuntu or Linux Mint on the machine and they can have their precious Vista back

Sorry for the rant but I have had it with this mob after all the money I have spent with them

John if the Vista came installed on the 1st machine, it is likely an OEM version so it is forever tied to that machine. Also if it was a purchased OEM it would be tied to the first machine it's installed on too.

People buy OEM since they are $100 or so cheaper than a retail version. OEM has no MS support either.

Note that OEM Licenses cannot be moved between machines - and can only be used on changed motherboards in cases of warrnty replacement.

Validation/Activation threads can get complex enough without having to try and deal with more than one case in a thread at a time.

Ok the disk looks like it might be an OEM as the wording on it is the same as my own 7 OEM disks (licenced to be used with new machine) the original the builders of the original machine gave the owner the whole lot that was put on the machine the Vista disk. Asus drivers and utilities etc.
On first sight I took it to be a non OEM.

So perhaps this is where it is all falling apart. My beef is that if for instance the old machine and HDD (which the HDD did) - died then how would or could you put another drive in and reinstall?? I just feel that she paid for it and therefore should be able to use it in another machine and HDD.

It just seems to be a bit unsympathetic on the part of M$ and you might as well go burn the $100 out in the back yard..

I did in fact put another new drive in for her and an OEM 7 which as you might agree is a far better option. This other machine was to keep her daughter out of her mother's machine.

Oh well if they want to be that pedantic I can always put Ubuntu on it for her so she can get on with her studies.

You can replace a HDD and still use the license, but it is forever tied to that mobo it was originally installed on.

Noel can give you the exact details but that is how it is with OEM licenses.

Ah well fellas it was worth a try so at least I know that in the future I will have to shell out for a full blown and a fair bit more expensive Microgreedytsoft OS.

Personally for me this is not a problem but for the few that have little expendable income or less and want to get on in life through study or whatever, it certainly doesn't go down well with me that they should be so pedantic.

I do know of some who have openly boasted on the local forum of being employees of a company that takes part in the development of M$ that can pick up full versions of the OS through the company they work for - for $20!!. Yet for for the unfortunate it's full payment or nothing.

I will personally give this young girl a computer I think even if I have to strip one down and put new parts in it and I hope the M$ fat cats enjoy their luxury yachts over the weekend in the Bahamas

Yeah I know Noel I just think as person who can afford to have these things feel it is so unfair to those who cannot and that is why I try my best to help them out - that isn't much because I have only been doing computing in any depth for the last three years.
As a Registered Nurse of 40+ years have seen a lot of less fortunate people than myself and it grates when I see those sorts of comments made by some smart um - person - given some of the situations of my friends and work colleagues who do not have access to have more or less what I take more or less granted is something that I try my best to help them out with at the minimal cost that I can.
Anyway I suppose whatever I think it not going to matter a jot to those fat cats who are only interested in their self and corporate interests.


I will say though that this forum is probably the most obliging and welcoming site I have ever been on - a great group of people who are always ready to come to the aid of those in need of help and believe me I have had probably more than my fair share of help over the time I have been in here - plus I have many friends that are very special to me.

Sorry nothing personal to you or anyone else in this forum and for the rant but someone has got to stand up and be counted for those who feel they cannot or do not know how stand up for themselves.
I work with some very hard working people who hardly ever complain about jobs that quite frankly I would find hard to do, are underpaid, and be quite unrewarding - something I think is sadly lacking in our so called humanity these days.

Hiyya Noel Sorry mate I got the erm - take a wild guess and scrubbed the thing and have tried one last time to install after wiping the drive with the Partition Wizard with 0's and the install has gone in with no messages as yet but if it comes back to haunt me I do one and send through.

I did it because I only did a diskpart and clean before on the drive that I had an XP on and perhaps the reg items ran over and hence the mess that the reg was in - not that I would have know half of what they were to be honest.

A Win7 install over XP is by definition a 'clean' install - so there shouldn't have been any holdovers from anything. Perhaps some disk problem led to a corrupted install.

Hum I think we might have got cross threaded (no pun) here Noel LOL!!

The machine the Vista was on and wrecked by the owners daughter and son I was going to reinstall but HDD itself was wrecked by what the son and daughter had done on it . The Vista disk would not reinstall on it to make as new so was at a loss as what to do.
So I thought well as I had a spare 500GB Spinpoint ( I am not a lover of Samsung HDD's) and a 32bit 7 OEM OS that I has stuck on a Frankenstein Compaq and that I would put these in the Vista machine instead, which it did without a hitch. She is a work colleague and also cleans my house for me as I can't because of working full time and a shoulder injury that gives me jip at times so she has promised me free clean - fair trade I think!

I then put an 80GB SATA HDD into an IBM M51 ThinkCentre (8144)(not a bad machine with a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 dual core and 4GB RAM - ex education dept job) that I also had spare and cleaned the HDD and then installed the Vista that had come off the mothers Asus machine that I had just fixed up for her.
I did this because as you know young people as they do like that facebook and iTunes rubbish plus not to mention Limewire and P2P downloading.
Now the daughter who is starting studies can have her own machine and if she wrecks this one well thats her fault. Anyway I have fixed Mums machine so she can't get into that rubbish again again enough said.

I then had the problem with that message - now have it reinstalled and so far so good touch wood.

The Compaq I put in a new 500GB HDD and a new 32bit 7OEM in for the Mum's sister who has had a really tough life and is near rock bottom and of course had no hope of having a computer and was spending her days cooped up with soapies on the TV. I treated her to a new monitor too plus wireless KB and mouse and it has turned her somewhat wretched life round

This Compaq I replaced with a machine that had much better specs that a farmer was going to throw out with a four year old XP machine as they were upgrading and they asked me if I wanted then for bits - less the HDDs of course.
So I kept the farm machine - very nice Q7400 4GB RAM DDR2 stuck in a new 500GB Seagate and a 64bit OEM 7, and it's my tester now (Karma).

So as long as this Vista holds firm on the IBM alls well and good but if they come at me again I will send it back gift wrapped - seriously for some fat cat to use.

They might think I am some sort of a crook but I can assure you I am not and for $100 for an OEM - quite frankly not worth the aggravation but why waste a perfectly good OS - doesn't make sense - you wouldn't throw away perfectly good clothes because you bought them and they were yours alone would you?? - no difference in my mind.

At the end of the day, the License for any OEM installation stays with the COA sticker (which is made non-removable for that reason).
The hard drive is irrelevant - it's only the motherboard that Windows bitches about - and you can change drives on a daily basis if you *really* want, without a problem.

No problems Noel like you I am working several threads, emails, fixing, and my own machines at the same time so I know how it is for time.

I know you are absolutely right and I applaud your knowledge on the subject it has certainly made a lot of things abundantly clear in my simple mind. But still that doesn't make M$ terribly understanding or empathetic people.
I don't begrudge anyone a living but there are livings and livings. I understand their concerns with piracy and I would if the ownership were mine too, but surely it would make sense if that particular licence came up more than say twice then something may be going on.
So all I can say is hope to heaven your mobo doesn't break on you eh? I had a fiend just recently have that happen with a new one and had to get a different brand because of the shenanigans and poor service there was forthcoming so I suppose I shall have to ask what became of the OS on that occasion.

Still like I said I shall put an OEM of 7 on for her if push comes to shove - just to push home a point - I just don't like this world becoming one of haves and have nots.

No I think there is more than what passes for a brain there Noel - but I know lots of individuals that wouldn't even be having this conversation with me I do appreciate still the reasoning.

Some may have what the pro-port to be a brain but in actual fact is a bag of tripe and onions:roflmao: though I am very confident none of those reside in SF!!
