Win 7 x 64 Home Premium, i5, 1T,6GBs

Hello
I would like to test new material but fear disturbing my host os.
My skill level is only a little above the average pcer and am concerned about my ability to handle this player.
I do not know if installation is straight forward or if I need a license or disc.
Any tips or suggestions regarding my questions would be appreciated.

Installation of VMWare Player really is straightforward. You can install it from this download (you need to register):

Running new material in a VM is indeed the best way not to mess with your host OS. Post back if you need more help.

VMWare Player is a free product. You do have to create an account (also free) on the VMWare website in order to install the software.

Installation is very straight-forward...next, next, next finish.

You won't disturb your HOST OS is any way other than installing this 1 piece of software. It's like installing any other piece of software.

VMWare Player is a free product and as already stated an excellent piece of kit. You can consider it a sort of sandbox to try things out safely.
I always have it installed, just updated it actually. If you do install it, ensure you download VMWare tools they help a lot.

Duly noted about FileHippo. I just prefer to get my software directly from the vendor, and I also am the VMWare admin at work and I use their enterprise products, so I have a vmware account.

Hello again and thank you for all the replies.
I was reading further and noticed there is a VM Box.
Is one easier /better than the other?

Both are similar and both are used around here. Some prefer VMWare (me) and others prefer Virtual Box.

You cannot really go wrong with either product.

As all said, using VM software like VMware and VBox is best to test new materials.

Like pparks1 said, I prefer VMware too. For me , VMware is much better. A lot of functions and good software.

I will try the VMware and be back with some questions I am sure. I particularly want to see the Chrome OS and Win 8 as I have the hardware for the latter if interested.

I don't know about CheomeOS in VMPlayer but you can get a ready built virtual disk for VirtualBox here. Chromium OS builds by Hexxeh, but I wouldn't bother its just a Chrome browser pretending to be an OS.

If you are interested in trying out Windows 8, then you need go no further than this tutorial, specifically for setting up Windows 8 in VMWare Player:

VMware Player - Install Windows 8

If you decide to use VirtualBox, then you can use this:

VirtualBox - Install Windows 8

I did not close this thread yet as I will probably come back for information.
Thank you for the tutorial as I am now stuying it.
Later, if I remove Win 8, will I then have Win 7 as my os and be able to then install the Chhrome os forexample?

You can have as many virtual machines as you have storage for the virtual disks. So no need to remove win 8 for ChromeOS. We will be happy to answer any of your questions although questions about win 8 would be better put in our sister forum Windows 8 Forums
