Microsoft Unveils New Look

It's most proberly the best they could come up with using ms paint :D, it's unbelievably poor, but MS are to tight arsed to out source and come up with some fresh ideas, plus they will end up in court for years to come after stealing someone else's logo then claiming it was their idea from the beginning :p

One of the poorest re-designs I've ever come across

:roflmao:

Jimbo you hit on the solution there: The installer should detect if this is touchscreen device and only then install the Metrosexual Start screen. Otherwise a start button should be installed on a desktop for use with a mouse.

Jimbo you hit on the solution there: The installer should detect if this is touchscreen device and only then install the Metrosexual Start screen. Otherwise a start button should be installed on a desktop for use with a mouse.

This solution has been repeatedly suggested from day one but the Mad Hatters of Microsoft insist on going down their particular rabbit hole called Windows 8. We users are to accept it without question or complaint because Microsoft has decreed that the future is theirs and theirs alone to define. We are to have no voice in the matter. If we do complain, the Red Queen will demand "off with their heads" and ban us to the world on the outside of Alice's mirror.

I suggest part of the problem is that Microsoft has seriously misinterpreted what Steve Jobs did to revive Apple. They think it happened because Steve dictated to the masses. No, his genius was the ability to predict a product that the masses would want when they saw it and then to stimulate his product team to design, build, and market it right. Microsoft has never been good at that. They are good at copying the ideas of others, innovating around the edges, and integrating the mess. They have provided products the customers can shape to their wants and needs. That is until now with Windows 8.

The Logo is the Cover.

Just like the cover of a book that I might be interested in, after reading the "Blurb" on the cover, telling me all about the Story within. Usually the Story does not match the expectation created by the Blurb on the cover. It is written by someone employed by the Publisher to create a demand for the product.

For 'Cover', read Ms' new Logo. The content is not as good as the hype, certainly for me.

Jimbo, you may be happy with it and that's great for you, but: -

I can use Icons just as you use Tiles. I can organise those Icons into groups, stick them in a folder and give it a name. That takes up a lot less space than those clunky tiles, buddy.

When you come right down to it, it's personal preference. But I don't hate the logo, even if I consider it to be the creation of a desperate PR mind. I don't even hate Win8. I just don't want it on my PC, thanks. 7 is just what I want, it does what I want in the way that I want to do it.

This is all becoming too much like religion and football (soccer, for the uninitiated) for me. Whatever is your preference, may not be mine.

vindanova,

Microsoft is one huge committee. Committees excel in not accomplishing anything but the same old same old and calling it something brilliantly new. They will kill anything that is really new and valuable that is beyond their ability to produce. The reason is that Committees cannot think and are thereby reduced to the performance of the least of the group. Further, the best member of the group can perform no better than the committee itself. This behavior is beyond the power of management to change because they are part of the committee.

To invent/create something really new and valuable takes a well prepared individual free to follow his vision of what can and should be. That kind of a person must either take over the committee, for example a Steve Jobs at Apple, or he will be be made non functional and will ultimately be expelled.

LOL.

It is to put on their shop fronts, and those signs that stick out over the pavemenet ( sidewalk).

It probably will be fine for that.

They are hoping to roll out shops all over the place - like Apple .

I liked their old logo. It looked sharp, especially with that little wedge design between the O and S.

On a positive note Microsoft can save money by not having to take other companies to court for copyright infringement over Windows 8. I mean they have the market cornered on Big Boxy Tiles of different colors and they ripped off the hot corner idea from Linux. lol

Unfortunately, Microsoft has billions of cash on hands so their race to the bottom can last far too long. I am quite confident that they can and will finally reach the bottom. Especially since their managers insist on fixing what isn't broken and forcing their pathetic ideas onto the rest of us. Sadly, Microsoft will join a long list of once great companies who thought they controlled the market and found the market had moved out from under them long before the end.

Even if you are an Microsoft anti-oppurtunist, that is one of the dumbest statement's. Taking into the fact, Microsoft, world's leading software company, for any multi-billion enterprise to hit rock bottom would be the means of corruption, horrible management & client negligence. The point is rather highly doubtful to emerge. It's not rocket science autor of leading for a change in the business world as your logic is surely far on the horizon's.

Metromess 8 may not be the result of corruption, but "horrible management & client negligence" are not out of the question. LOL

A real interesting discussion can be had on logo design I guess. We own some Samsung products in our house. When I look at the "SAMSUNG" on the device, that's all it says ... Samsung. In a plain font. Simple.

Can it be interpreted as "boring?" Well, I guess. I see it as no-nonsense and clean. For that same reason, I like the new Microsoft logo. Simple and to the point. But everyone has a right to like it or dislike it, I suppose.

Pal as I've been a logo designer for the past 17+ years I've seen quite a few designs, but one thing that springs to mind is the changes.

Take Coca cola, this design has changed very little over the years, as has the Samsung logo. Infact when Coca cola did try and change the look but they quickly reverted back to the original. :)

samsunglogo.png

cocacola.png

In other words all though the Samsung logo is simple in design .... it's recognisable and diverts from the original very little and although it has updated through time it still looks the same, as does coca cola ....

But Windows has changed the look and feel so dramatically that in my opinion it's so bad that it I feel I'm dealing with a different OS and different manufacturer.

There's nothing wrong with a simple look but it's so different and "bad looking" from the original "windows logo" design that it's frankly embarrassing and has no resemblance to the original ;)

It's basically a square version of the flag. The panes represent nothing. If they did, it would problably look a little more like this:
2800ei8.jpg

And the Windows 8 logo would be a blue version of the phone logo.

"The logo has two components: the logotype and the symbol. For the logotype, we are using the Segoe font which is the same font we use in our products as well as our marketing communications. The symbol is important in a world of digital motion (as demonstrated in the video above.) The symbol’s squares of color are intended to express the company’s diverse portfolio of products."
