Windows 7 boots up at 3am everyday from shutdown

I've checked the bios, task scheduler, power settings. I can'y figure out why it is booting up every day at 3am. I can replicate by changing the clock to just befor 3am and then shutdown. I am lost.

Any idea's?

It has to be the auto boot is set in the BIOS. Go back over the BIOS again and look closely for this. It can be labeled differently in different BIOS (or UEFI BIOS) so I can't give you exact instructions.

I've looked three times, there is a USB wake support, but no other setting. My wife looked too. She does desktop support, and I do network support. So it's not like we don't know what we are doing. I even updated the version of bios from a09 to a15.

You might also double check your wake source event viewer log using the tutorial below to see if it may ID what the culprit may be that is waking the computer.

It's more than likely a wind-up by Microsoft programming geeks!

When you install Windows all the services for running disk-defrag, system backup etc
- are set to run at 2 or 3am by default.

I would check those first!

If you are very very very sure it was shutdown..... so win7 isn't running at all, it must be an external source.
Because it happens always at 3am and because changing your bios-time can be used to trigger it again, it can't be a real external event such as wake-on-lan, wake-on-usb.

Something is monitoring your BIOS clock and powers pc on if it's at 3am.
Who can read the bios clock if no operating system is runnig???? Answer: The BIOS itself (if not powered off)

The user may be putting it into sleep mode/hibernate etc

Just giving them further options - no harm in that!

That's why I think it's not a sleep mode problem

• Boot up your computer and enter your BIOS setup. Usually this involves pressing the Delete key as your computer boots (your computer should say Press DEL to Enter Setup or something similar as you turn it on).
• Navigate to the Power Options. If your BIOS supports it, there should be a function for automatically starting up your computer at a certain time of day. Mine was called "Resume by Alarm", but yours might be called something different.
• Enable that setting and set the time you want your computer to start every day. Save and Exit the BIOS, and your computer should follow that schedule from now on.

Of course in your case you should disable it

This sounds very much like your Automatic Update settings which, coincidentally, are set by default to run at 3am. To check to see if this is the case, change the update time with the following Tutorial and test.

No question it is powered off, it is not in sleep mode. I can duplicate it by changing my system clock to just before 3am, then shutdown. When it powers up on it's own I see the option to go into bios, by pressing F2.

wake source event viewer, had no entries when changing the filtering. The event viewer is how I know when the computer boots, the first entry is

The computer is a Dell Inspiron laptop, so I assume it is a dell motherboard.
The BIOS is American Megatrends Aptio Setup Utility. The menu options are
Main - set the date and time
Advanced - options only to enable and disable, and the only WAKE oftion is USB Wake Support, which is disabled.
Security - passwords
Boot - boot priority
Exit -
There is nothing in there to wake the computer that I can find.

What is the Inspiron Laptop model number (e.g. 1523, etc).
I looked at the Dell documentation for a couple of recent Inspiron laptops and none list the BIOS and options, like they do in desktop documentation.

With the correct model, I can contact one of my friends on the Dell forum and get the info on whether this has the wake option or not.
