My PC was 100% until I moved from a hotel (temp) to my rented townhome.

I'm on a netgear router with Time Warner cable.

I compare my home PC to work and work PC handles all the listed websites (below) 100% correctly.

http://www.bicycling.com

Will not ever load (indefinite hang) on either IE8 or Chrome. But, I can ping it and it's fine.

This should say hotpads.com WITHOUT the www. prefix but it's being converted to a link by this forum software.

HotPads - Map Search for Real Estate, Apartments and Houses for Rent, Foreclosures and Homes for Sale for looking at rentals. It's similar to Maps.google.com whereby the map is composed of squares (unit of "download"). In IE, the regular map option won't work but aerial (satellite) and a hybrid DO. It fully works in Chrome.

Cycling Powermeters | SRM, Quarq CinQo, PowerTap, Garmin Powermeters works on Chrome but will NEVER come up on IE.

And on some websites (forums) there are supposed to be some little icons next to each post, but they never show on my home PC. But, they do at work or on my smartphone.

Pure genius. Using anonymous.org I CAN fully open the www.fascatpowermeters.com website. I can't test hotpads as it is forcing the \mobile version of the website. But, I can NOT open www.bicycling.com via anonymous.

The router is a NETGEAR provided by Time/Warner Cable. Said router has never been used at this address (rental).

I have never seen one particular fix for this, but it is almost always router related, and usually accompanies a new router. The sites may also open in safe mode with networking, which baffles me. If it is router related, why does it work when in safe mode? It still passes through the router. Makes me think it is security program related.

I will point others at your thread, but you might want to try a clean start to see if something is conflicting.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

You might also try copying your HOSTs file to another location, and deleting the one in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC as a test. Restore the file if no change. If removing the HOSTs file corrects the issue, you can reset your to default.

How can I reset the Hosts file back to the default?

My hosts file is all comments (#).

I've looked at my router (North Carolina) via 192.168.0.1 and there are hardly any settings I can change. Conversely, my Verizon router (Maryland) had a lot of settings you could change.

My startup (NON-services, STARTUP tab/applet) is pretty bare minimum. Skype, MS keyboard, Logitech webcam, iTunes, Quicktime, MS Security client, Java and StickyNotes.

On www.bicycling.com, for example, when I type it into the address bar and hit ENTER, the TITLE of the window changes immediately to that webpage meaning it's gotten something from that IP address. And quickly. But the green progress bar stalls.

I saw that and my MTU needed no change: 1472.

NOWHERE on the router does it show anything about anything re: connection. It's got virtually no recognizable information as I'm used to seeing when viewing a router interface. Nada.

It's a Netgear CGD24G.

You might try the troubleshooter. Right click the network icon in the system tray, and choose Troubleshoot Problems. Since you have the issue on 2 browsers, there must be something in common. Can you access the sites in safe mode with networking? A Guy

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but at least 2 of the sites use XHTML, all 3 use Javascript and all 3 use some kind of google site verification. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me, can determine if that has anything to do with the problem, and how to fix it if it does.

Yes, but I had NO problems the 2 months I was in a local hotel (visiting these same websites daily). As soon as I used TW cable at the rented townhome, problems immediately.

But I have certainly downloaded some microsoft security fixes in the past month or so.

Firefox; incomplete loading of websites, and false links

Hello,

Since I could not find the solution to my problem here or elsewhere, but did manage to solve it otherwise, I hereby take some time to share with you my actions taken.

Via Windows Firewall with Advanced Security(Control Panel); selected Inbound Rules; selected Mozilla Firefox, then Properties, then tab Advanced, and selected Domain. Private was already selected. I did these actions for both names: Mozilla Firefox

I also executed:
Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall\Allowed Programs
I then selected Allow another program and added Mozilla Firefox.

This only seemed to have fixed my issue with using my Yahoo e-mail account, but Youtube would still not play any video's and I also suspected a much slower upload of certain images on webpages.

What I did next: Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall\Allowed Programs I then selected Public (Home/Work (Private) was already selected) to Mozilla Firefox. This seemed to have fixed Youtube, but I still have some doubts. If I find anything else to improve or completely restore this issue I hope to let you know.

UPDATE!

I was, again, to quick to conclude that I had resolved my issues. After I found out that I also had these issues with Internet Explorer, and got really annoyed and frustrated with doing further research, I made the decision to do a Windows Reset. I did so, after carefully creating a backup of course, and now I have not experienced any issues for several hours already.

I did come to realize afterwards that I did not just appeared to have issues with websites, but also other graphical issues on Windows; like the gadgets, they appeared suffering from a defect also (I just did not realize it at that time).

Conclusion:
A reset on Windows did manage to clean things up.

All the best,
Richard

I upgraded to IE version 9 and no difference in my problems. It seems semi-javascript-related stuff that's wacky. I would think the javascript code is within the IE code itself so you'd think this v9 upgrade would have fixed it. I do believe I tried the Windows Reset for IE itself before but with no changes. Are you alluding to Windows Reset as in for IE??

What version of Windows do you have? Home Premium? Professional? If you have Pro or above, you can install the XP Mode and it will almost like testing on another computer.

...or go ask a neighbor with TW to test those websites for you

...then we will know if it is related to TW or something in your place :-)

I have Win7 pro. I think it has something to do with my specific connection somehow. I also don't know any of my neighbors such that I could try their wireless connection.

I will considering downloading XP for Win7.

I found something interesting. If in amazon.com, if I do a search of music, sometimes none (or little) of the album art jpegs show in the results list. I can click refresh until the cows come home and it won't load any more album art.

I close the browser, reopen, go right to amazon.com, issue the search and now ALL the album art shows. It's like something internally gets "polluted" and from then on, the browser won't work correctly. Weird. Again, this is a fresh download/install of IE version 9. Same problems as 8 regarding what won't display, etc.

Running IE withOUT add-ons results in no difference. Functionality/display/javascript-ish stuff still missing from the same webpages.

To reiterate: Google Chrome is better than IE in this regard, but it still won't bring up some websites that I can ping.

I was not suggesting that you ask to connect to their Wi-Fi - only that you ask them if they can visit the cycling website using their computer. But they might not want to risk visiting a website unknown to them.

Did TW issue you this router? If so, then other TW users in your area might have the same router. If one other person had the same ISP, router and problem getting to the cycling website - then we could know to stop working on your computer and start working on the router - like asking TW to replace it.

Understood. TW issued the Netgear (used) router. I either would buy my own router OR switch to ATT and hope that it really was TW being the problem. I'm 100% sure my PC was 100% good in the hotel room (wireless, for 2 months) and noticed the TW issue almost immediately.

I have a friend in North Raleigh who I could try when I'm over there this Saturday. Thanks for the good idea. She's on TW wireless.

Chrome and IE both are missing the "edit" icon on a forum (forums.bicycling.com) I visit regularly. This icon would allow me to edit my own posts on that forum. Interestingly, at work where this works, the edit icon is the very last little "burst" of things to be rendered on a page. There's a little delay after rendering the rest of the page and then the edit icons show.

Chrome can display some websites correctly that IE won't (hotpads.com map for finding housing/rentals). IE will only display the map correctly the first time and from then on out, grey only.

Since we have a variance between the 2 and Chrome and IE v9 are fresh downloads, what can we conclude if anything?

Someone suggested uninstalling all found versions of Java (not javascript) and then reinstalling that. However, some of my symptoms do seem somewhat javascript-related (not Java).

I would uninstall all versions of Java and see if you ever miss them. If you run across a website that requires Java, then you can decide if the site is worth the risk of having Java installed. If you never needed Java, then you were putting your computer at risk for absolutely no benefit. I need Java, so I have it. You might not need it.

The sites you are working with do use Javascript (as do a lot of websites); but I cannot make much sense out of the variances that you mentioned. Rendering a map only once is weird - that does not sound like certain parts of the site are blocked. After you test your computer at another home, we should know more.

Another option is the XP Mode. If IE8 works in there, then we know that it is not your ISP or your router.
