One of the real reasons was so that you would constantly have to go to the Metro screen and thus be exposed to the deluge of Live Tile ads that will soon be appearing (if W8 is successful).

When MS found out that people were using a Registry hack to restore the Start Menu (in W8 DP) they DELIBERATELY stripped the code out of the subsequent versions.

There is no reason that MS couldn't have achieved their so-called unified UI experience without removing the Start button (and replacing it with an invisible hotspot).

Wow, that's nuts, but that makes so much sense.

Ads, that was the link to this puzzle I've been missing. As they say, follow the money.

Bing apps. are on there - bing is struggling.

Going to the store etc - skydrive - leads to other online stuff.

They want you up there - using their stuff and paying subscrioptions.

Keep shoving it at the users - they will bite.

You can still retrofit it with this app (forgot the name). I never bothered because I hardly ever use Windows 8.

Lots of 3rd party start menus have popped up to cater to the demand.

Even the oem's are making them.

3 dozen last time I looked. A few free ones - several are cheap 3-5 bucks.

Some are making tens of millions of dollars, even at 5 bucks a license. I think stardock have made $30m on theirs alone. I bet thay can't believe they have been handed this goldmine.

That tells you something.

That may be a problem though. If M$ suddenly decided to reintroduce the Start menu, these guys that make millions may not be amused. M$ may have painted themselves into a corner.

Exactly. They have made a packet now - damn lucky to get the chance.

I have no idea how big stardock is. If they are just a handful of people - they are set up for life.

If MS thinks they will benefit from putting in a new start menu, they will.

Stardock are also making something else which looks like it will sell well. It is for making apps. run windowed on the desktop - instead of annoyingly covering up the whole screen.

If MS can get a decent number to buy 8/blue - then it is much bigger maket for stardock to sell their other stuff to.

If they don't care about their customers why would they care about the vendors? It appears they only thing that may influence Microsoft if the bottom line. If enough customers reject Windows 8 they may make reinstate the start menu. It appear customer rejection of Office 365 cause Microsoft to change its policy of only allowing an install one one computer without the possibility of a transfer.

The problem is this is leaving me with a very bad impression of Microsoft's business practices, since it is conveying to me a customer be damned attitude.

Just checked - there are about 40 at stardock. That kind of sudden earnings will be big for them.

It is not just stardock - there are loads of others - stardock might be the biggest seller.

I was referring to the change between W8DP and W8CP.

I believe new Registry hacks have been posted.

There are at least a half a dozen Start Menu replacements available (free to use or otherwise).

Dragged into court for what? Restoring their own code to their own product? Even if they did get fined, it would be a drop in the bucket to a monster like M$. What do you suppose would happen if the EU hassled M$ enough to make M$ decide that EU countries are no longer worth the hassle and refuse to license their products there anymore?

If M$ keeps screwing over their customer base like they did with W8, theres going to be fewer and fewer people who care.
Who knows, if the right company was to jump into the fray at the right time and convince people that they care more about their customers than M$ does, M$ might find themselves in trouble.

The EU is actually now up in arms over MS failing to live upto their 2009 promise of keeping a browser options list in 7 for the EU distributions. The EU wants to level fines against MS for that one! EU fines Microsoft $US732m over browser ballot debacle - new york times, opera software, Microsoft, european union, european commission, Windows, legal, software, operating systems - Computerworld

It wouldn't be the first time they have tried to slam dunk MS however for any grievances with the software giant. EU hands down record $1.35 billion fine against Microsoft

Back in the late 90s they were fined a $1mil a day for not allowing competitors to offer browsers in Windows with MS having made sure IE was default. For a giant like MS however that is only a drop in the bucket based on their revenues!

And before I forget while keeping on the main topic, Will 90 percent of users always hate Windows 8?

Certainly the need to find a 3rd party app like Classic Shell for something people already expect to find in each version is the nasty idea someone at MS had for seeing 8 desktops look the same as the new tablet series while the RT gui was designed for tablet. The writer brings up a reference regarding "usability" when making the comparisons between the types of users. Experts, willing adopters(or willing to learn), and then the mainstream 90% novice users.

There are more like 3 dozen start menus available.

No registry hacks - MS removed some of the code. Nikolay has great way to alleviate much of the suffering from the disease.

He puts back the code with a couple of very small .dll files. No services , no additional executables running.

His is only 3 bucks for 2 pc license.

I think with Windows 8, M$ prepaired the terrain for people starting to look elsewhere. More and more public bodies in Europe migrate to Linux and that trend will only accelerate. I myself explored a few Linux distros - and guess what - some are quite good and would be very suitable for the average user. Download this PDF from here and you will see.

Am having a go at making batch file to make your own 7sp2 install media.

You will neeed an install dvd - and you need to d/l the updates ( I will explain where from and which ones - it is pretty easy .

Just run the batch as admin and it does the job for you. It takes a while putting the updates in - then it will make the iso. You can go away for lunch and let is do it's thing.
