A 13" Ultrabook is not really a tablet. It is a very mobile laptop in my book.

Yeah, but it's near tablet sized and very very mobile. And very suitable for Windows 8, especially if it has touch screen. However I got the non-touch screen version because I hate glossy screens.

This thing is small, thin, and light.

If I needed portability for mostly consumption, a smart phone would make far more sense. Many smart phones even have keyboards that, despite being ultra tiny, are more useful than the virtual keyboards earlier tablets had before the hybrids came along. The keyboards on the hybrids are a drastic improvement over the tiny keyboards on the smartphones that have them but their portability take a distant second to smartphones.

Tablets have their uses but what I can't understand why so many people, especially M$, think they have to replace desktops for everything, even though they can't and there is no need for them to.

If I read those articles correct they are assuming that when a Phone or Tablet is bought its because the new owner doesn't already have a PC or Laptop. Therefor chose a Toymobile over a PC.
How about the buyer of a Tablet or a Phone is just adding such items to there already owned laptop and PC collection.
I wonder how many members of the Forum have bought a new Phone or Tablet but yet still own their PC and Laptop.

They assume that adding a device means someone is also replacing a device they already have. I don't believe that to be correct.
When one buys a new movie on a DVD does not mean they got ride of all the other DVD's with movies on them. They just added to their collection.

New Toymobiles are additions to (??), not replacements for (??)

I currently have two desktops, the Windows 7 machine that's in my system specs, and a Windows XP Pentium 4 machine that's served me well since 2008 and will continue to serve for as long as it'll live. I also have a Sony VAIO Windows 7/Linux Mint 14 KDE dual-boot laptop that I use as a tertiary system at home and for computing while away from home.

In addition, I also have a Sony Xperia TL smartphone and a Sony Xperia S tablet (both run Android). The former I use as a cellphone (obviously!) and a music player while on-the-go, the latter I hardly use at-home but I still consider it nice to have.

Does the smartphone and tablet replace my desktops and laptop? Nope, the stuff I do on my desktops and laptop would be exceedingly hard, if not impossible, to do on a smartphone/tablet.

I myself just bought a small (13 inch, 2.9lbs) ultra book, not even giving consideration to gaming. Why.... mobility. With cloud computing, and an app enabled OS like 8, yeah, the desktop could be in trouble.

I hope not, as a desktop has it's use, especially high performance tasks, and gaming, but as mobile devices become more and more powerful... who's going to want a desktop?

My two cents.

A laptop/ultrabook is effectively a desktop system as far as the mechanics go, it's just a desktop that's made to fit in a much smaller space by sacrificing some amount of performance.

And a smartphone is just a small device supporting the magnifying glass companies while the desktops are just giant bricks tethering you to a desk.

No matter what we do, say, or have.... there's always someone with a counterpoint. Had I said tablet, someone would countered that

I wasn't counterarguing anything, I just wanted to point out that a desktop and laptop are basically the same form-factor when you get past the physical size differences: They contain largely the same hardware and (besides Chromebooks) they run the exact same software as desktops.

I've tried doing work on a tablet before, and it's difficult and horrible, I would rather use a desktop/laptop, I even prefer to use a desktop over a laptop; I'm the complete opposite of mobility.

I'm a "desktop guy" too.

I hate using laptops (those awful scratchpads drive me nuts).

That said, I'd rather use a laptop than a tablet.
At least you can balance a laptop on your lap.

I played with an iPad (I don't know which version) and I had to put it down after a couple of minutes, because it was too heavy.

I agree about the "scratchpads". Using them is like doing brain surgery while wearing boxing gloves. That's why I use a wireless mouse with mine.

I have a small wired mouse with a retractable cable that I use with my laptop as I don't like touchpads either. That said, touchpads are sufficient (and in a way more convenient) for me when I'm in a very small space (like an airplane seat) and I only want to watch some anime, listen to music, or play some very simple games on my laptop.

To add: I too hate those laptop trackpads, so when I ordered my notebook I immediately bought a cordless mouse. I simply can't get use the notebook mouse pad.

I don't own a tablet yet but I believe they have their place and I may buy one.
Years ago at the right price I thought they were a great device. The stupid issue is the suggestion that they would replace a desktop for desktop oriented applications. They are complementary devices.

Well... as a 56 YO architect who has been into computing since the Commador and using AutoCAD since it's inception (we used digitizers prior to mice) I can tell you that it's tough to draw with your finger on a touch screen.

I ran W8 on a VM for about 3 months. My issue is that each new operating system delivers more live content (read ads) and becomes less of a work station, and more of a social/entertainment center.

What I want in an operating system (besides making the hardware run) is boot me to a black screen, provide a taskbar with start button, and I can take it from there. Keep your UAC, I don't need a nanny, and I damn sure don't need a product, that I have purchased, telling me what I can or cannot do with it.

I want an operating system for professionals, and the ignorant masses can have the gee-gaw.

I hope everyone realizes that the grand plan is to give everyone a dumb terminal and make all computing in the cloud. That way, "they" control all the content, "they" control customizations, "they" control your personal data, AND "they" will charge you monthly for what you used to own outright.

It's already begun.......
