Solved My AMD card is set as default, but windows doesnt detect my monitor

This is very frustrating.
I have a Radeon HD6450 on my desktop pc, and a monitor which is plugged into its VGA output. I installed windows 7, and it installed and ran fine, but it didnt have the ati drivers, so the resolution was low. I installed the windows updates, including the ati drivers. When I restarted, the windows loading screen displayed, but when it finished the screen went black. After a bit of research, I think the problem is that the radeon card is switching output to DVI:

Unfortunately, I dont have a DVI cable to test this, and I dont want to buy one if I dont need to.
To get into windows I need to go into the bios and set the onboard graphics to be the default graphics, and connect my monitor to the motherboards VGA output.
I can then connect a second monitor to the Radeon's VGA output, and windows detects it and all is dandy, except I have to use onboard graphics.
Does anyone know why my Radeon card is switching to DVI on startup? Catalyst control panel didnt seem to have any relevant settings..

What version of Catalyst are you running?

I'd go to your video card manufacturer's website and use the one they offer, instead.

I'd keep dropping back versions, if there is no website offerings, you can go version crazy here:

guru3d.com [site has been around a long time, no worries]

Follow the normal removal procedures for video card drivers.

I would check ASRock's web site for motherboard chipset driver updates also (Southbridge/Northbridge).

Having to use DVI sounds ridiculous to me.

Just extra:
Is your HD LED light staying bright during the bootups when screen goes BLACK?
Doubtful in your case, but that is a sign the hard drive needs defragged.
Other common time the video goes black like that is a RAM problem.

I found the manufacturers website, sapphiretech.com
From there I tried Catalyst 13.4, 13.1, 12.8 and 12.6, but the problem remains.
Also, when using 12.6 and 12.8 with onboard graphics as primary, the catalyst control center wouldnt start, with a message saying "Catalyst control centre host application has stopped working".
Ill try more Catalyst versions later, as its getting late.

eold12, also check if your bios has a multi-monitor enable setting. Sounds like it was set to one or the other not allowing both or conflicting.

Never mind, I don't think you can do that config

Go into Bios into IGPU turn it off and make the GPU primary that is your issue you must turn off the onboard in Bios and let the main GPU take over it will give you this option on IGPU

There also should be a order of how you can change the way the GPU Is configured if you have a old board this may be the issue the screen shot is of a motherboard i have that has a IGPU and it shows that you can turn it on and off I suggest if you have this turn yours off and it should register the main GPU

Thanks, I set my onboard graphics to auto instead of enable, and now it works
Even though it worked fine on windows xp before.
