Unstable After Sleep

Is anyone else having problems with stability after waking from sleep?

Issues experienced -
  • application buttons unresponsive
  • taskbar button unresponsive
  • program crashes
  • explorer will not restart after being killed with task manager
So far my troubleshooting has just been to close all open programs before going into sleep, but that had no positive effect.

Actually its a pretty common issue. Ever since Vista the sleep functionality hasn't been working for me either.

I have had sleep issues only with virtual pc 2007 installed: my NIC would not reconnect. So far, I am not having any issues at all without virtual pc installed. Sleep works on 7 and worked for years on Vista.

On both my Pc's with vista, they would never awake from sleep.

Also running W7 on an old Dell Insprion laptop (1.5Ghz, 1.5GB).
I have a different problem, which I already sent some feedback on.

I set my laptop to do nothing when I close the lid. It will only turn off the screen, which is fine. After a while, Windows decides that my laptop should sleep, while the lid is still closed. When I open the lid again my laptop won't wake up from sleep. I have to completely reboot to use it again.

what hardware are you running?

seeing as instability after sleep isn't a huge issue on the forum, i guess it's something non standard that i/we are running.

my stuff:

win 7 64 bit upgraded from win vista 64 ultimate
lenovo t61 laptop

hardware i consider non-standard:

bluetooth
mobile graphics card nvidia nvs140m overclocked with ntune
fingerprint scanner
ricoh sd card reader
TPM device

if anyone with similar problems has similar hardware please post it up.

note: a failsafe way for me to freeze my laptop after waking from sleep is right clicking on Computer in the start menu

Instead of holding on the power button, have you tried just pressing it for a second to see if it does resume that way?

yeah still no success. only way i can get my computer to do anything after sleep is to hold the power button so the computer total shuts down.. boot it back up.. and resume windows.

Explorer only crashes AFTER the computer wakes up from sleep or hibernation. It crashes when I try to run a program from the start menu. As I described above, the start menu freezes ... and the message "Explorer has stopped working" pops up.

Do you have gadgets, or anything else that runs interactively with the Desktop?

I have not had problems with resuming from sleep in a long time now - but I also haven't had RocketDock installed in a long time, and I wonder if that was the root of my previous woes....

Win. Media Player pops up after sleep & other glitches

Among other annoyances with Windows 7, Windows Media Player always pops up on the screen when it wakes up after sleep. I cannot find a way to turn this off. Can't even find a startup folder which must be there somewhere that might control it. GRRR!

Among other glitches, W7 has a habit of stalling and spinning its wheels with no apparent way of killing the offending program, forcing me to re-boot and start again.

There appears to be no Task Manager in the system. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing.

The system is a clean install of Win7-64 Home Premium in a Core-2 quad processor with 8 GB of RAM.
