Solved Windows 7 Gif Viewer Works perfectly

soo... problems.

I install the latest Win7GifViewer, and while it works for gifs, and will happily include .jpgs as i press to see the next picture in the folder when I open via a .gif.... I see no way to set it as the default picture viewer for .jpgs as there is only the rundll32 and shimgvw files in the program's folder. This is just because I perfer to open my pictures up in one viewer and not have some pics for this win7gifviewer and some pics for the default win8 photo viewer.

In the actual win7gifviewer itself I also have a few problems. Is there not a way to scroll through the pictures other than pressing the next/previous buttons? Left/Right buttons on my keyboard refresh the current gif, and tapping/sliding my finger left or right increases the zoom rather than moves to the next picture. In addition when in SlideShow mode there are no options on the right-click menu to play/pause the slide show, or exit slideshow mode. I have to alt+f4 out of slideshow mode in order to exit.

I have a beta version that supports multiple file types here
https://github.com/Corgano/Windows7GifViewer/archive/master.zip
and source here
https://github.com/Corgano/Windows7GifViewer

All you need to run it is Windows7GifViewer.exe, the rest is the source files.
This is STILL BETA and MAY NOT WORK, but works on my system
I don't have a no-UAC version, probabyl never will - I can't imagine it working without UAC very well anyways
Mind that, this should still work for admins and if you have UAC turned off.

This is all very confusing to a n00b. Jarmezrocks reply in post #96 tells me it's all done & ready to go but then other posts between him & corgano make it sound like there's still some quirks. I'm pretty well lost when it comes to getting myself out of a jam so am of the mind right now that it would be safer for me to bypass for now. :(

Thanks for the prog. Pity it doesn't work on limited accounts, I mean it doesn't get installed for all users.

I no longer use it for that reason as I use a limited a/c for most of the time.

This is 99% perfect for my needs:

1 - Animates gifs.
2 - When in slideshow mode if I press the delete key, the file is instantly deleted - in Win7/8 "Windows Photo Viewer" it will exit slideshow mode and I would have to press the delete key again, which is infuriating.

That 1% that I need fixing?

1 - It needs a icon associated with the program/files which are associated with it. At the moment these are just a blank white square.

2 - If I have a regular picture or animated .gif which has small dimensions, in Win7/8 "Windows Photo Viewer" it will essentially make this fullscreen in slideshow mode. This program does not (yet) do this, and it will just show the regular dimensions of the picture with a whole load of black space around it.

Is it possible to impliment these two fixes?

Does the new "XP"-Picture viewer for Win7 allow me to use the keyboard arrows to advance from one jpg to the next? Or am I forced to use the mouse to click forward to the next picture?

Microsoft displays an increasing animosity toward keyboard users. In the beginning it used to be all keyboard, then came the option of using a mouse to click, and now we are entering the phase where more and more functions CANNOT be executed unless one uses a mouse.
Condemned to obligatory mouse use by Microsoft?! How is that "progress" -- "upgrade" -- "improvement"?

Do we all have to dumb down to the smallest common denominator of mouse-clicking home users, or does Microsoft keep its power users in mind, who use the keyboard for much faster action? (Sorry, just a rant I had to get off my chest.)

@ all those that have downloaded & like it: please tell me from which post you found the proper link. I have been back & forth through many pages here & it looks like 3 different people have developed the program. :o

Jarmezrocks and corgano, thank you so much for this. I have been looking for a way to get Windows Picture and Fax Viewer since I started to use Vista and realized I can't view GIF files the normal way anymore. I'm on Windows 8.1 now and I still want it!

I totally support the name "Windows (XP's) Picture and Fax Viewer", but since it's too long, the best would be "Picture and Fax Viewer". It can't be any better than that, because as you said, that is exactly what it is. Also, I hate "Windows 7 Gif Viewer" because this is for Vista/7/8, and it supports other file formats beside GIF.

As for making it UAC independent, it doesn't affect me because I always have it off. But having in mind others don't, this sure should be implemented if you manage to find a way to do so.

EDIT:
I have installed it and it works great. One thing I noticed, in Open With menu, it's being called Photo Gallery Viewer and it doesn't have a proper icon.

mq05.jpg

"Windows Photo & Gif Viewer" would be most apt.

Windows as part of the name is also important, as it signifies that this is a re-working of the old Windows software, which is what people want, than simply using some random third party software.

Photo is a bit shorter than Picture, and MS seems to have dropped Picture in later versions (Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Photo Viewer (7/8), Photos (win8 modern app). And it also shows that it handles more filetypes than just gifs.

Gif being in the name is important because I'd wager the reason we all use this software is to enable the animating of gifs again, which MS took out after XP.

Eagerly awaiting news on if these two features can/will be implimented in the future. If they will be, then this program would be absolutely perfect for me.

Thought of a 3rd thing this program needs:

3 - when playing animated gifs in Internet Explorer they play at normal speed. When playing animated gifs through Win7GifViewer, they can be slow/stutter-y. How can we fix this?

I used to search my picture files by date. Once the search had finished and I had a window full of resulting thumbnails of pics from different folders, I would open the first one and it would display in Windows Picture and fax viewer. As I pushed the "next" arrow, it would go to the next pic in my search results as opposed to the next pic in the same folder as the original one.

I had my hopes up that this new program would do it, but I'm afraid it doesn't. Is there a simple tweak to make that happen?

Also, I flipped back and forth through this thread but couldn't figure it out: is there a way to use this without being asked for permission to use rundll32.exe every time? Its a bit of a pain.

This works great but I got a bit of an issue with this.

Mainly its made windows convert every single .gif, .jpg, .png and others into ".tif" file extestions even though they are still .gjfs/jpgs/pngs/whatever and when setting to small icons its made all the picture icons into just file icons (the first 1 highlighted like so).

So how can I get this image viewer to not make windows edit the file type associations or give off that file icon?

It sure would be nice if Goofwear or corgano hadn't abandoned this thread.

I just looked into angelfire & found some negative comments so I won't go there.

I updated the link for my register file types script. The angelfire one quit working. (angelfire is crap). Hopefully this one stays up:

Wikisend: free file sharing service

This only half worked, it separated the .gif file extensions but didn't separate everything else.

Be honest I'm just looking for the original Windows (XP) Picture and Fax Viewer, that seemed to work best and there was a modified version that you guys created for Windows 7 sometime back, can I have that? also how can I uninstall this register file types script I just tried and the GIF viewerso I can just install the modified Picture and Fax Viewer clean?

Both my download links went bad, so I have now included the registry script as an attachment. I was hoping to avoid this since only registered users can download attachments, but I can't find a file host that is worth crap. Sorry for the inconvenience.

goku262002: These are the specific setup steps I took to get the GIF image viewer working:

- Download the Windows 7 Gif Viewer.exe installer from http://www.goofwear.com/windows/downloads/

- Install, and ignore the box that might pop up saying "this program didn't install properly"

- Right click on C:\rundll32.exe and change the compatibility mode to Windows Vista, and also check the box "run as administrator"

- Run register_file_types.reg

This registry script should associate bmp, jpg, png, and tiff files with the viewer. It worked on my Windows 7 x64 system. Make sure to run it with admin priveledges. You might have to "take ownership" of these registry keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GIFImage.Document
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pngfile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TIFImage.Document

Note that the "GIF viewer" mentioned here is actually just a modified version of the original XP viewer, and should work exactly the same. The author simply changed the name, and I believe modified the code a little to make it work in Windows 7. I personally think he should have left the name alone to avoid confusion, because it will work with most other image types besides GIF.

I also attached the original unedited viewer dll from windows XP, but I don't know if it's possible to get it working. You could try pasting it over the shimgvw.dll that was created in C:\, but backup the original first!
