Windows Explorer crashing on right-click under x64 RTM

I thought I'd keep updating here in case it helps anyone else.

I've installed Windows 7 Professional x64 and loaded most of the apps I had previously. Including ones with shell integration such as the Nvidia Control Panel, Winzip and Daemon Tools. So far its all good.

Today I intend to install KIS2010. If that looks OK I'll install Firefox 3.5. I'm installing Firefox last as thats looking more like the cause to me. I don't think it is KIS2010 as I had the crash prior to installing it previously and Firefox was is usually one of the first things I install so it was definately on my system when the crashes started to happen.

Edit: I forgot to add that I have not installed any third party codecs. Previously I had installed VLC player which I thought was the cause of the crashes. Uninstalling did not stop the crashes however, its possible that it left a codec or file behind that was the cause.

I looked into the uTorrent thing from page 3.
I became curious so I decided to do a test.

Since my system has been pretty stable for the past week,
I wanted to see if I could help you guys out.

I sent a few items to the Recycling Bin and then loaded up uTorrent.
If I tried to empty it while the application was running,
I would get the error.
Likewise if the application was closed,
it would go back to its stable self and empty.

Correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation,
but I hope this helps out regardless.

I looked into the uTorrent thing from page 3...

I did'nt have uTorrent installed when this was happening to me. However that doesn't rule it out as a cause. Maybe we are looking for a single cause when it might be numerous issues.

Update to my situation: I've now reinstalled KIS and Firefox under Professional x64 and have had no explorer crashes to date. Apart from switching from Ultimate to Professional, the only thing I haven't installed is a codec pack. That's the next step.

I could be wrong. I am not a programmer.

Context menu entries are called from a DLL. DLLs are shared. Installing Progam B sometimes replaces the DLL called by Program A. Program B may never make the call on some machines. Program C may not write the DLL if it already exists at time of install. Program A or B gets uninstalled or updated. Program C can BSOD when it calls the DLL from either Program A or B. Or whatever other juxtapositon may apply.

I got what you are saying but this may not be the case for all the softwares.

I'm aware that it could be more than one thing.
I was just curious to see if uTorrent would bring it up in addition to what we know.

There is some but still little correlation from what we've seen to make any assumptions. Even if we do pinpoint a few applications that are certainly offenders, it doesn't mean another application installed in the future won't set off the error.

You guys are correct in saying that it can't be pointed to any single (or even group) of applications. There's just something that's making ntdll.dll unhappy :\

Did anyone ask about BSOD dumps, or event viewer errors?

Sure thing. Here's one from mmc.exe crashing.
The explorer.exe crashes look the same and happen more often.

Quick Update: I now have Windows 7 Professional x64 installed along with all the applications I had under Ultimate. Including KIS2010, Firefox 3.5, Winzip and Sharks Codec Pack for Windows 7. I have left all the installs vanilla with all context menu items as are.

I have experienced only one explorer.exe crash. This was soon after installing the codec pack. It occurred when I tried to delete 2Gb of files while running VirtualDub in the background which made me think it was the codecs. However, the event log did not say it was related to ntdll.dll and I cannot get the crash to reoccur so I think maybe it was just a one off.

There is an occassional slight delay when I right-click which makes me think, "here we go again". But it doesn't crash and everything seems to be fine and stable.

Things that are different from the previous *buggy* install:

- Professional version instead of Ultimate.
- Firefox has been updated to 3.5.3.
- I have not installed the x64 add-ons of Sharks Codec Pack.

I'll install the x64 add-ons today and see how we go.

Mate, if ur explorers still crashing, its firefox 3.5. ive had this problem since vista x64 ultimate. that ntll.dll file is usually the crashing party. uninstall firefox 3.5 and you should be good. sincei love firefox that much, im using 3.0.10. :P

Hmm.. minidump folder seems to be empty.
Hidden files and such are enabled.
(Actually got msvcrt.dll crash while doing this.. they happen less often than the ntdll.dll crashes)

I've had the same problem and have isolated my problem. It all started when I installed Daemon Tools Lite w/ 1.60 SPTD installed manually. I think its because Daemon Tools Lite was integrated to the windows shell. I've uninstalled it and never had any problems since. Hope that helps. Maybe some 3rd party program windows shell integration is having a conflict with explorer.exe.

I've got Daemon Tools Pro (latest version) installed and haven't had an issue with this install of Windows 7. My previous install crashed without DT installed.

I do think its related to context menus though as disabling them did reduce the frequency of crashes, but did not eliminate them.

I have disabled the KIS context item this time which has fixed the slight pause I'd get when right clicking. But I'm still nervous everytime I right-click as I'm expecting the crash.
