Whether Windows 7 will start faster than Vista for you will likely depend on your particular computer's setup...

At best, your laptop will gain a few extra minutes of run time; at worst, the battery life will be about the same as it was under Windows Vista...

however: Windows 7 is consistently slower than Vista at launching applications...

To say that such results are too close to call would be an understatement: The difference between the two is so minor that you likely wouldn't notice it even if you had the OSs running side-by-side on identical hardware...

Overall, Windows 7's performance improvement over Windows Vista is slight.

Even so, the most important part of our conclusion stands: Windows 7 is faster than Windows Vista. In a world where upgrades are often performance downgrades, this may be the biggest Windows 7 feature of all.

At best, your laptop will gain a few extra minutes of run time;(WOW a FEW extra Minutes- That is what we want- RIGHT) at worst, the battery life will be about the same as it was under Windows Vista...(WOW, no way I find several minutes more... in every case - tested on at lest 12 different Laptops)

however: Windows 7 is consistently slower than Vista at launching applications...(Wow, This I find is 100% false... Win 7 has bet Vista and XP in every - configuration.)

To say that such results are too close to call would be an understatement: The difference between the two is so minor that you likely wouldn't notice it even if you had the OSs running side-by-side on identical hardware...(Yikes, gads I have found this statement - 110% wrong. I have tested Win7 on many different New and Old systems that Windows Vista and Windows XP - Windows 2000, will not evern install on. CLOSE not even. Win7 hands down no Question.... )

Overall, Windows 7's performance improvement over Windows Vista is slight.(Far better performance... Win7 works when Vista will not install, How can that even be compared.)

Even so, the most important part of our conclusion stands: Windows 7 is faster than Windows Vista. In a world where upgrades are often performance downgrades, this may be the biggest Windows 7 feature of all. This statement is 100% TRUE...

I also feel that 99.9% of all Magazines are what you want to hear, 1st they are paid so show something that makes a Brand or special Program SELL, open a different mag and WOW almost totally different specs-brand and programs used.

I disagree totally with Snuffy.

The article tallies completely with my experience.

The author is brave to go against the wild hysteria surrounding 7 - that is the opposite of what most people want to hear.

He is bound to get a lot of criticism.

All credit to them for publishing exactly what they found.

When Vista was launched (Febr.07), most systems were still sold with 1GB of RAM. For XP users, that appeared to be a BIG system. But as we all know by now, Vista performance with 1GB of RAM is pretty dismal. This is completely different on todays systems which come with 3 or 4GBs for 32bit or 6 to 12GBs for 64bit. With such generous availability of RAM, both Vista and Win7 run very well. The advantage of Win7 is where you have less RAM. I was able to run Win7 in 1GB with excellent performance (and I read that other people had a similar experience).
But the real performance boost for Win7 will come from the SSDs. I run one test system with an OCZ Vertex and that performs in a way that was never seen before.

As a former large systems operating systems architect I would be interested to understand how you concluded that Win7 is better designed than Vista. What are your measuring criteria?

For gaming, 7 pwns.
I get 10-30 more FPS in an online game of COD4 compared to vista.
Not only that, but im using the latest vista drivers on Windows 7 and it works perfectly.
Security is about the same, both support ESET Smart security so it really doesnt bother me.

Maybe we better leave it at that.

Maybe you should.

And you should have known fine well that what I mean't that the basic of tasks are faster in Windows 7 than in Vista in my opinion.

But I guess that was too good an opportunity for you to turn down to brag about your surprime intellect that no-one else here has.

Actually QuackPot, your extremely limited response to a perfectly valid question got the answer it deserved...And why should anyone be able to read your mind and assume to know what it is that you meant... You made an oversimplified statement and was unable to back it up.. As far as superior intellect goes ... well those are your own words... "... If its true, it aint bragging..."

Cute article, but W7 is still faster on my computer than Vista was in terms of loading up, shutting down, loading up and the general use of applications.

But hey, when in doubt, blame it on the new guy.

Every PC is different. QuackPot has his opinion and he knows how his PC is running under Vista and under 7.
Same for me Vista was running ugly on my laptop which is less than 2 years old but Windows 7 runs better and faster.
I don't have to read any test results from anybody because I know the truth from my own experience.

My first build!
It's hard for me to know whether or not Windows 7 is faster than Vista....since I've switched over to 64-bit on Windows 7 and I never really ran Vista on my current RIG.

Personally, I like 7 a lot more than Vista. Most of it is probably related to my experiences with Vista out of the gate, which wasn't great. On my wife's laptop and my work laptop, Vista has been just fine.

To me, Windows 7 is a fast installing OS...it comes with all the drivers that I need right out of the box. The GUI and the superbar look very nice and are quite functional for me. The installed footprint size doesn't seem any larger and I like the aero functionality of aero peek and aero snap. I like the Libraries concept, i like that the System Restore functionality is customizable via the GUI. And I will have built-in Trim support for my SSD which will be nice.

A few seconds here and there isn't the make it or break it point for me.
