Apple immune to Windows 7 impact, analyst says

Analysis shows Mac sales typically climb after Microsoft unveils a new OS

Computerworld - Microsoft's introduction of Windows 7 later this month won't cost Apple any Mac sales, a Wall Street analyst said today.
"I analyzed the impact of the last four Windows launches and found no negative correlation between them and Mac sales," said Brian Marshall of Broadpoint AmTech. "In fact, [Microsoft's launches] almost act like a delayed accelerant on Mac sales."
After comparing Mac sales with the launches of Windows 98 in June 1998, Windows 2000 (February 2000), Windows XP (October 2001) and Vista (January 2007), Marshall found that in all but the case of Windows 2000, Mac sales either increased or stayed steady.

Read this on a couple other sites, and on one of the sites posted the following (to lazy to rewrite the post).

Also, the writer failed to point out that Apple doesn't fear Microsoft any more because they are not really in the same boat when it comes to OSs. They lost out long before Win 2000, and Win 98 SE. They lost out back in 1992 when Windows 3.xx, and then Win 95 in 1995. The 7% increase in quarterly revenue is not because of the Mac, albeit the iPod, and iPhone.

My beautiful wife and I recently went to a new furniture store in the area. Mind you, we live in the richest county in America.

The first couch we saw was very striking. The price tag knocked me on my *ss. $29,000.

We left and went to Wendy's for a cheeseburger. We couldn't afford a Big Mac.

I've never really had any Mac experience, however I do own a working almost, what 30 year old apple with the 2 floppy drives original kb& mouse ect. I played with for a little bit. IMO people who purchase Macs do it as a trendy uppity lower your head cause if it rains you'll drowned kind of attitude. It's like a designer computer. And not very upgraded able at least not without spending major jack. sorry probably got a little carried away with this one. Fabe

You know it's an expensive furniture store when they refer to their wares as "pieces", as in "yes, that's a lovely piece, and it's only $6400 plus chairs!"

Needless to say, my entire household was purchased on eBay for $70 (as several transactions of smaller magnitude).

Also those people really big into photoshop etc for a while I don't see why you would buy a Mac? Windows had 64bit photoshop before Apple did and I still don't believe they have it yet. And Windows also has a ton of great video editing software. I truly think that Apple is just running off an old note when it comes to that and just riding it out until it ends.

I never see a reason to buy an Apple computer. Same hardware in a fancy shell and a different OS and they can charge way more for it. Does your harddrive stand to live longer because it is in an Apple computer over the same brand in a PC? I don't think so.

Very well put. What you said plus its a "designer" computer, there is no real reason to need a mac. Its a lifestyle, not a "OS written by Jesus Christ himself" (should copyright that so Mac don't use that in their next anti windows propaganda). Why would you spend 2x (literally) on the same hardware to have a mac that can only do maybe 20% a PC (at best)? Just stupid. People are suckers for "it just works" ... well, newsflash, Windows always "just works too" except it goes beyond "just" working into a fully functional and versatile system! MS should use that as an ad haha.

I would have to agree that Apple really has no place in the business world but I'm going to say something that I thought I would never be saying. I've been considering a Macbook Pro. Not because of OSX but because the hardware... They have their place in the world.

You could get the identical hardware from another brand, like Dell or HP for much less the cost. Hardware is definitely NOT a reason to consider an Apple. Only consider it, if for some reason, you prefer OSX over Windows 7.

They have their place, just like a diamond studded cell phone case has it's place. I don't see them worrying about Windows 7 to be honest, because they have their followers, or zealots as they are known, who will buy anything with an apple logo on it, regardless of cost. If you approach it rationally and unbiased, it is difficult to justify the costs. If an Apple cost the same as a similarly configured Dell, then it would certainly warrant equal consideration.

In my company, I got my graphic designer a Mac Pro tower that cost more than 5 of the other Dell towers I purchased for others. Those 5 Dells out-paced the Xeon Mac Pro in Photoshop scripts, general rendering tasks, and even in load times for Photoshop. It also has more stability issues than 12 other Dell systems we have in the office.

I bought a Mac a few months back, more out of curiosity than anything else. Got the bottom of the line Mac mini. I used it quite a bit at first but now I hardly touch it because it just isn't anything special. I upgraded OSX from Leopard to Snow Leopard because the upgrade only cost me $10 but it was a very ho-hum upgrade. My Win 7 machine blows it away. I only play on the Mac, I always go to one of my Win machines if I want to do any real work.

I hang out on some Mac forums and I have to chuckle when I see the Mac guys crowing about how they upgraded their HD and RAM (the only upgrade options on a mini). Many of them pay Apple to do those simple upgrades for them because they are scared to death to open the case. I'd bet most on this forum have built numerous rigs from scratch so replacing an HD or adding RAM is no big deal and certainly nothing to crow about.

After spending some time in both camps it seems to me that the average Win user is more knowledgeable than the average Mac user.
