Microsoft republishes KB3035583 (Get Win X App)

If you need Windows run it on a Virtual Machine under Linux

If you do this, would you necessarily be insulated from the issues discussed in this thread? Or would you still have to watch updates and KBs with the same eagle eye?

I think the poster meant that you install windows 7 clean in a virtual media in Linux, do a quick connection to activate windows 7 if needed. Then disconnect the virtual Ethernet connection. Then use windows 7 for your favorite software that won't work with wine. I really don't like virtual box, I find the screen to small for me.

Yes you would have to watch for the same behaviour. The way I would do it was to install 7 in the VM, activate and update it but disable 10 updates and then disconnect it. You could then use it to run software such as games etc that would not run under wine. Crossover by Codewaevers is an answer to some issues and I shall be getting several versions / copies of that for a Xmas present for myself. Microsoft have turned a fully fledged Windows Geek into someone who now wants out of the whole Windows ecosystem. Microsoft have always been azzholes but now they have shown their true despicable lack of respect for their customers. It is MY Machine and I decide what goes on it.

Do you mean:

Install Win 7 in the VM within Linux, activate it, update it, disable 10 updates and then..............disconnect the Ethernet cable whenever you intended to use the 7 VM and reconnect the Ethernet cable at all other times? Doable, but a pain.

I've got a dual boot with Mint going now, with Mint on a discrete SSD. Other than learning more about Linux, the most annoying part of that method is managing personal files, backups, and email across 2 separate operating systems. I'm wondering if your method might be less annoying. I've played with VMs, but wasn't amused with the graphics on stuff like Photoshop---so I went with a dual boot----but might try a VM under the right circumstances.

You can disable the virtual Ethernet card in the virtual computer and effectively remove the card. Then the VM is quarantined and cannot connect to the network or internet.

As one who, like many, is in the process of a Microsoft divorce, I am opting for a clean break. (Remember that Paul Simon song? "Hop on the bus, Gus. Make a new plan, Stan. You don't need to be coy, Roy, just get yourself free"): Well, I've been trying out Zorin and now Ubuntu (on it now). I'm finding you can copy many documents from Word and Libre Office will open them. Pictures are also no problem. One you make the transition, you can do almost everything you need on Linux. Exceptions are specialized software, in my case music creation. But I do that on a W7 machine that I keep offline 99% of the time. And that's not the fault of Linux; the manufacturers aren't considerate enough to make their programs run on Linux. I'm close to not needing Windows for anything but music at this point. I'll keep Windows on my internet rig so my wife can use it if her laptop breaks (not getting a divorce from her).

Convenient

A very "convenient" mistake to make (for MS).

It is MY Machine and I decide what goes on it.
If MS want to give me a $5K PC system with W10 on it, then I won't complain when they say they own it. ;)

A very "convenient" mistake to make (for MS).

It is MY Machine and I decide what goes on it.
If MS want to give me a $5K PC system with W10 on it, then I won't complain when they say they own it. ;)

Agreed Lehnerus. I definitely don't believe it was an "accident". They're just trying to reach their 1 billion installs. I've never seen an optional update automatically checked before. What a coincidence it happens now. :sarc:
They just didn't like the backlash.

You can disable the virtual Ethernet card in the virtual computer and effectively remove the card. Then the VM is quarantined and cannot connect to the network or internet.
I'm running W10 that way.

I only turn the network on after an upgrade has:

  • Been out for a while
  • Had few complaints about bugs
Since I'm running W10 in VMware Player on a LM17.2 Host OS, I use the Host OS to traverse the Internet.

Not this crotchety old lady. It's MY data that will be going onto it and MSpy has no right to any of it.
If they did do that I wouldn't use it for any of my private activities, only games and TAFE.

I'd use Linux Mint 17.2 for my private browsing and to generate documents.

I don't think it will be the last "so called mistake" MS admits to , they will continue to try different avenues to get everybody on Win 10 .

I just hate the BS reasons they come up with to try and pull the wool over everyone's eyes , it's as transparent as the "you can keep your current health care , period . Just how gullible do they think we are lol .

Don't answer that , very gullible , i know.

One quick off topic comment, I don't have a link because this information was on my local news. This is from my memory. Here is what I recall the local news said.

That the insurance companies fault not the act itself, the insurance companies did a sneaky way out. They were forced to cover certain people in California at lower rate (Note, state may not be accurate). Instead of covering them, the insurance companies just stop selling policies in the state. The insurance companies will always find a way not cover or raise your rates despite the law.
