Set Custom Locations in the Save As Box ???

I followed these instructions to set custom locations in the Save As box:

How to Set Custom Locations in the Windows "Save As" Box - Simple Help

The two custom locations that have a defined address/path are now the only two that display.

What I wanted, from top to bottom:

Recent Places (Does not display)
Most Used Photo Folder (Shows up and works)
Most Used Documents Folder (Shows up and works)
Computer (Does not display)
Network (Does not display)

I have tried a few educated guesses at trying to get the missing three to display; in fact, it even says that I can add them; yet, it gives no instruction as to how I should type them in.

All three of the missing locations display in the unaltered default configuration.

If I leave those three lines blank, then Computer will display along with my two custom locations.

Any ideas as to how I can achieve what I am after ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

For the path of Recent Places, just enter Recent Places either capitalized or lowercase. Not sure if capitalization matters.

Computer not sure about. That's a virtualized shell folder.

The Network and Sharing Center is probably the same thing.

I have an older version of Windows 7 and the instructions on that webpage are not correct. The correct path is:

Administrate Templates | Windows Components | Windows Explorer | Common Open File Dialog

Thanks.

My path to the Common Open File Dialogue was the second option as well.

I hadn't considered capitalization or no; I had entered Recent Places; I will try all caps and no caps.

The default list includes Desktop and Libraries, neither of which I have ever used; it sure would be nice to replace those with something useful.

Did you try this and get it to work on your machine ?

All caps and no caps did not work.
If I leave one space blank, Computer will show up in that position.

Nothing I have tried gets Recent Places and Network to show.

I gave up on that first method as a lost cause and found this:

How to Customize the File Open/Save Dialog Box in Windows

I followed the instructions and used DWord Values for the three system folders and String Values for the two custom folders.

It would not have been possible if I had not had their list of numbers for the system folders.

I lined them up in order (five are all that are allowed):
Recent Places
Custom Folder
Computer
Custom Folder
Network

I brought up the Save As box and all seems to be in order, --- with one minor hitch that I am not sure about ---; although it still says "Recent Places", and I have never before seen files listed in Recent Places - only folders, there were shortcuts to about a dozen recently saved files showing along with the folder shortcuts.

I will delete those file shortcuts from the Recent Places folder --- well, er...., I thought I would; they are not showing in the Recent Places folder, only in Recent Places in the Save As box; maybe I need to look that number list over a bit more closely for a different DWord Value; I used "08".

Other than that minor glitch, I believe it is going to be okay.

I just noticed a difference that may be causing the file shortcuts to be displaying; instead of saying "Recent Places" like it did before, it says "Recent Items".

I searched thoroughly through the list of numbers provided and there is no specific number for Recent Places.

The "08" that I used just says "08 \Recent"

Does anyone know the DWord Value for Recent Places ?

Update on the situation:

I have went at this from just about every conceivable angle.

I have wasted hours following internet searches down blind alleys.

I did stumble onto the path to the Recent Items folder --- as follows:

C: > Users > Username > Appdata Folders > Roaming AppData > Microsoft > Windows > Recent Items

Now, at least, I can delete the thousands of irrelevant recent item shortcuts.

Then I finally found the path to Recent Places (or should I say "a" path) :

C: > Users > Username > Links > Recent Places

I got excited and thought I had finally found a solution that would provide my Place0 with Recent Places instead of Recent Items; alas, every which way I have tried has resulted in nothing showing in that position.

The other four shortcuts or whatever they are called are working fine.

Surely, if the Windows default is for Recent Places to show, then there is a way for me to make this work.

I have searched diligently (and unsuccessfully) y for a numerical value to insert as a DWord Value.

I have even perused the Registry in hopes of finding a clue.

If anyone can provide the correct DWord Value or String Value to insert in that spot, I would sure appreciate it.

Does adding the dword of 08 \Recent not show Recent Places?

That folder is more than likely a virtual folder much like My Computer so it's a bugger. Surely 08 \Recent would call Recent Places.

At first glance, one would think so; but, 08 calls up Recent Items, which is what I currently am putting up with until I can get this figured out.

Recent Places displays only shortcuts to folders; whereas, Recent Items displays shortcuts to every file and the folders, which can be quite a confusing mess.

Where Recent Items is concerned, Microsoft must have a pretty loose definition of recent, as files I hadn't seen in two years show right at the top of the list.

I really appreciate the help and especially the moral support.

Before I had wore my eyeballs out from looking, I would have thought the answer would have been easy to find.

Computer, by the way, is 11, and Network is 12, and they work fine.

Okay, I took two screen shots of Recent Places (default) and Recent (changed via registry key) and the difference between the two is subtle. By in large they are both the same.

I wouldn't hand delete the recent documents. You can do it all in one go with Ccleaner under Windows Explorer | Recent Documents. DO NOT use the registry cleaner in Ccleaner. It can and will muck your system up. In addition to Ccleanr I'll use System Ninja. Check both out if you use Ccleaner already.

Did you see the program listed at the bottom of that HowtoGeek link? It's called Places Bar Editor and makes this really simple, but there's a caveat. If you select default to bring everything back to default you'll have to go into the registry and delete the created comdlg32 key left behind. If not, nothing but desktop shows up for Save As. This program also give you the ability to see how the Save As will look like using the Test button.

If you use Ccleaner, you can drop its annoying update crap and task bar icon and auto running crap in its settings. That's what I do. Over the years it has gotten more and more bloated. As with every download, scan it at the Virus Total website. Many years ago some hacker infected the update channel or update to Ccleaner with malware. So since this is a reral possibility to anything you download, no matter how safe you think it may be, always, A) scan it at Virus Total and B) if a hash is provided compare the SHA256 hash at Virus Total or with the HashCalc program. You can just drag and drop a file onto HashCalc. Now you know.

Read this: How to Use CCleaner Like a Pro: 9 Tips & Tricks

To expand Ccleaner ever further with a simple ini file placed in the Ccleaner directory. GitHub - MoscaDotTo/Winapp2: A database of extended cleaning routines for popular Windows PC based maintenance software. Note: Ccleaner will take slightly longer to load with this installed.

The wipe free space doesn't. LOL I was able to recover files afterwards. Doesn't matter to me since I FDE. LOL Full Disk Encryption.

Thanks !

I did see that when I first read the article and then my mind must have went blank as I probably never would have thought to check it out.

That may very well be the way to go seeing as how I am not getting it figured out the route I have been going.
