Modern Warfare 2 and Windows 7

but I've had a couple of freezes in half hours play.
More setting to play with but I am also running on 1920x1200.
;)

Your not the lone stranger there.

In both 7 x86 and x64 it hard freezes the PC around the half an hour mark for me.

In Vista x64 it freezes around the 3 hour mark. However the cutscenes / loading screens have the pause/skip glitch whereas they're smooth in Seven.

It's pretty annoying

First things first, Modern Warfare 2 is a fantastic game, it's near perfect BUT IWnet is far from perfect, if this game had dedicated servers I'd happily have unprotected sex with it and make strange disk shaped babies.

Current problems with IWnet and MW2:

- Joining with a large party is extremely troublesome, more often then not a member of your party with get disconnected from the host, get kicked because the game is for low ping players only or countless other errors.

- If you're playing in a party and the game tries to merge lobbies there's a big chance one of your party members will be kicked.

- IWnet makes strange host choices, quite often you get stuck with a host who can't give anyone more then 3 - 4 bars (10 bar setup @ 20ms per bar)

- IWnet fails to migrate host more often then not, sometimes it says "No suitable host available" when I'm in the game able to host and keep everyone at a green ping.

- Iw4mp.exe crashes often when trying to join a game.

- The game has random lock ups, small 1 - 3 second freezes during multiplayer, many users are also reporting green, black or pink "matrix like" effects covering their screen for a few seconds.

- Users are reporting losing their multiplayer rank after a PC crash.

- Rank hack is available and working, I've seen at least 10 max prestige players so far (usually at the bottom of the scoreboard)

- Aimbot/Wallhack are currently available and undetected by VAC.

- You can't type in the lobby.

- Games often start with unbalanced teams.

- When a player leaves mid game more often then not a replacement isn't found for him so the game stays with uneven teams.

- No team balance, if your team loses a player you can expect to be outnumbered the rest of the game.

Anything I've missed?

I haven't experienced any of these problems. In fact, MW2 has been nearly perfect on all multiplayer accounts, for me. I don't miss dedicated servers one bit. In fact, I like this WAY better.

I swear this looks like some sort of language issue. I know it's a long shot, but have you ran the game in safe mode?
I am not disagreeing with you since it seems like an issue with the font, but....

The only time there's a language selection during the installation process is during installing Steam. The game installation does not present language selection, or anything else for that matter; here's installation process from Steam support. It's a pretty lame process without any option being presented, other than do you want to install the game.

The same PC has no issues with any other games, MW1, L4D2 demo, etc, language or otherwise.

I have no idea how ATI/AMD works as I have always had Nvidia/Intel but, it is recommended to first uninstall the video drivers and then run a registry sweeper to get rid of the remmants of that installation... did you do this?

Most people just go ahead and install the newer drivers on top of the old one and some corruption may appear because of this.

Did you also checked that your monitor drivers are up to date and/or compatible with the OS?
No, I did not do that, just ran the installation over the existing one. While I agree that corruption may appear, it would affect other games and the OS in itself as well. There's no monitor driver for my monitor for Windows 7.

I actually setup Windows 7 Professional 64-bit last night just to test the installation of MW2, after removing it from the Steam account. Yes, the ATI driver had been installed clean in this OS. There was no other program installed, just Steam and tried installing MW2. The installation of MW2 has aborted with an unable to run some script. Trying to install MW2 under XP on the same machine didn't work either, the installation simply hung after about ten minutes.

While I understand that one of the common denominator during my adventures with MW2 is my PC and the hardware could be suspect; however, the Steam client and or MW2 could be the culprit just as well. The fact that Steam keeps the game configuration and possibly the installation files as well makes reinstalling the game pretty much useless as I've learned. Had the installation of MW2 be successful with other version of the OS on the same machine, it's likely that the same configuration would've been migrated from Steam. Quite possibly with the same font issue as previously. I have another machine where I can try it, Windows Vista, but I am getting tired working on this issue.

Steam is IMO one of the most reliable programs, If it goes down its back up in seconds. I have yet to see it down longer than 20 mins..

I have been using steam for ~4 years. Also, Steam is NOTHING like DRM.

to give another view, i recently started to play cod4 on pc after playing on 360 and man is it hard everyone has custom this and custom that really hard for a noob like me. I'm buying MW2 today for PC as i prefer mouse & keyboard and am quite glad it's setup like xbox live - feels more like a level playing field. I can understand the anger over it all but there is some positives
cheers settingsun

The game is completely unplayable because it is set up like xbox live.

Anytime someone who is the host feels like it they can limit the upload and lag the rest of the players and get a free win because they will not lag at all and everyone else will.

I have personally witnessed people calling in the AC 130 regardless of how few kills they had. Someone called in an AC 130 5 seconds after the match began with 0 kills once and just stayed in the air shooting the entire time.

There is already a crack that allows the pirated copies to play on IWNET without any problem.

Aimbots, shoot through wall and wall hacks are already present after less than a full week of the release.

People have already created custom games that allow power ranking and infinite ammo high jump etc and it is all ranked through IWNET without consequences. There is a video on youtube called lol server or something like that which shows this in action.

And if all of that within the first week of release does not deter you from wanting to spend the cash then host migration or should I say the lack there of should. 9 times out of 10 if the host leaves host migration does not function as intended and you end up dropping from the match. Or the game will randomly just dump you or crash with an error.

This game is a complete disaster in every aspect and unless we get some form of dedicated server to replace the currently unbearable match making service then this game is not worth even 5 bucks to me. I don't care if I end up playing the game on a dedicated server system that someone wrote in their spare time it would still be 1000 times better than the match making system.

I take it your sound, video and monitor drivers are up to date?

Please don't say yes for the sake of saying yes. If they are, post the version of the drivers... just to make me feel better ;)

You were right Astala...

It was the video driver for my X1950XTX card. I didn't realize that the latest ATI drivers are not supported for this video card. Once the latest driver was removed, registry leftovers cleaned out, and the legacy ATI drivers installed, the strange characters turned in to regular fonts.

The way it came about is that IW did respond to ticket that was opened for this issue yesterday and the tech suggested that the issue is the video card driver. I almost responded to him that he's full of it, but decided to follow the links he sent. Low and behold, it's all good. It would've been better listening to you caople of days ego, but it's all good now; thanks...

Root kit uses very little resources on your PC as well; that's basically what Steam is by definition.

The Steam client runs under the "System" accounts on Windows, has full control of the PC, "calls home" on scheduled basis, it can prevent you doing things that you may be desirable for you. All of this only affect legitimate end users with valid license keys for the game; hackers and people who use these hacks don't care are not affected by the Steam client. In some respect, I do agree with people who use the hacks.

Certainly Valve does not use this root kit, oops, the Steam client, for any malicious activities; however, they can and will use the information collected for advertisement purposes. This information is very valuable for advertisers and it can fetch quite of few bucks.

Steam is NOTHING like DRM.

No it's worse..

Steam is a different type of DRM. It tries to verify every time the game is run that its legal or unmodified.
I myself have to say it has gotten "A LOT" better then when it was first launched, and makes things a little easier for people like me that travel and like to play a game or two on my down time.

Hearing that it took about a week that mods and other hacks appearing for MW2, it doesn't seem like that Steam is trying too hard preventing game modifications. On the other hand it doesn't stop Steam to create problems for legitimate end users who had purchased the game in question...
