Windows update caused bsod

earlier today i installed the latest security updates released by microsoft along with the malicious software removal tool update. upon completion of the updates i restarted my computer as usual to finish the installation. when it rebooted i was unable to log-on. i would click on the picture and the circle would spin like it was busy but after a few seconds my screen went black and then came back bit nothing changed. after a restart in safe mode and a system restore everything is working again. has anyone else experienced anything of this sort with these updates?

I had downloaded those updates a bit earlier, and postponed rebooting, because of being involved in a TV program, but reading your question, I went ahead and rebooted. Fortunately, it didn't hang on the reboot for me, so I guess that you just got a bad download. The point at which it hung is where that it continues configuring the updates. Since you did a System Restore, I would imagine that the installation of the updates were erased, so you might try running Windows Update again and see what happens.

i tried installing them again but it made no difference. when i restarted in safe mode (the only way i can log on) windows told me this

You might try installing BlueScreenView:

BlueScreenView - blue screen of death (STOP error) information.

It is a simple means of looking at the data in the minidumps.

ok now i can see the data and 2 files are highlighted red. Im assuming those are the problem files. one is named hal.dll and the other is ntoskrnl.exe. what if anything should i do now?

I'm not going to be able to give you a definitive solution, only point to the possibilities. In the top window, scroll over to the column titled Caused By to confirm where you should focus. Combine this information with whatever that you find in the Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor and go Googling. Sometimes I get the feeling that a search for something like this is like looking for a needle in a haystack, but sometimes you get lucky and find a useful link right away.

I think the option you got would be to do a repair you Windows 7 because according to files you mentioned i did a search got a link Fix for ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. Error 0x0000098 when booting up Vista | Windows Reference

It related to Vista still it matches your situation

As a last resort, you can probably get some help from MS tech support. The last time that I called them on a problem related to updates the call was free.

thanks for the help guys for now atleast my computer is usable. shyamsasinran, i dont have an installation disk since i got my win 7 from the digital river student download so that fix isn't an option however as long as i can use my computer im ok. i dont like not installing microsofts security updates but if they make my computer unusable i guess i dont really have a choice.

I recall some others who had problems with digital rivers downloads, but don't know that this is related. Can't you burn it to a disk yourself?

yes since i do not any blank dvds at the moment i have an iso file. do you think that could work?

When you have a problem with Windows Updates you need to use System Restore to restore before the Updates.

Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

There will be a restore point listed for those Windows Updates.

Afterward, add the Updates back one at a time to determine if there is still a problem and then restore and discard that Update.

You need to make a System Repair Disk ASAP to recover from more serious problems. For example if you couldn't start your computer after these Updates, you can use the Repair Disk to run System Restore, or Startup Repair.

Type backup into start search box. If you haven't made a System Image Backup, save one externally or to another drive. It will then offer to make you a Repair CD. Otherwise, there is a link there to make the CD.

If you'd like to make an ISO from the Digital River download so you can burn it to disk to have a permanent Win7 DVD to install or repair Win7, here is the tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html

i already ran system restore and have determined that the security update caused the problem. i would create a backup image except that i dont have an external drive big enough at the moment. on a similar note im out of blank dvds so making a bootable iso is unfortunately also on hold for now. thanks anyway

You only need a CD for the Repair Disk.

If you have the 100mb System Reserved Partition which is installed sometimes with Win7 (check Disk Management) then you have the Repair Console available by tapping F8 at bootup.
