Avast gives you rock solid protection !

Norton does which is why I decided to install that instead.

Also nice one.
Are you instaling NIS 2010?
If yes, after installing there in application Ratings put "Full Scan". so it will scan all files regardless if it is trusted by Norton or not.

P.S. Dinesh, sorry for hijacking your thread ;)

No problem mate.
I also want to tell you guys that there are many malware that some AV will detect and others may not. So you just can't fully rely on one anti virus. A combination perhaps helps protect the computer better.

Everything seems fine in that area. Norton has a lot of "Extra" features to help protect your PC.
Back on topic, Avast 5 did have a much-improved interface. Though sandbox mode needs some work.

Avast 5???
I am so out of date... BSOD!

XD

I've also been using Avast for quite a long time, until I found out that I had over 500 malware on D:\ where I kept all my files. avast never reported a single thing, for over 3 years, so I switched to Avira until I bought Win7 and installed MSE. But now I'm tempted to instal Avast once again...

Have put Avast on over a hundred machines without a single issue or virus in 10 years time.

First learned about it from MS tech support who also offered AVG as on par as a worthy free competitor, until it bloated up 4-5 years ago and never recovered it's lean mean profile again.

All this again comes down to personal preference and tastes.

Every situation and every individual case is exclusive.
So if one program is doing really (and I mean Really) good, then it dosen't mean it will be best option for me aswell. There may be a lot of things that will make that particular software the worst (and I mean not only on usability, but form security point of view) I could get.

Simple example, I may not like it's interface or even don't understand as it is too complicated (or given only few options to configure so I can't tweak it), so I will not touch it and leave like out of box.
Or I don't understand how this product is different from the one I have used, so will use it wrong way, making it useless.
Or I don't like that it is to annoying and turn it off.
Or otherway round, I am used to and like to be told about every little change on my system, but the product which is rewarded with top awards made for people who like not to be disturbed. So I will open myself to dangers believing that my software will tell me if something happens (But it will not, and it's not products mistake. And it's not my mistake that I opened myself to danger, because in fact it's not danger as in my old software would warned me)

And in my opinion all those tests and comparatives are just marketing, to make people change from one product to another and change to another again every month or so....

Even if there are honest people who want true tests. They will never use that particular product YOU use or I use. They will use it their own way and face dangers their own way. So it only means that it was good in particular their situation and their way of using it.
Because they are not me, they don't know my tastes, they don't know how I will use it..

And I think following those comparatives results just blindly is stupid.

But I am not saying those tests are useless, it may be helpful if you can't decide between 2 products or want more details on it's reaction to the way maybe similar to yours and so on...

But following them just because they won lots of awards...... :sarc:

No offence meant to any member of the Forum. If some took it personal, I apologise for that...

But if you are still interested, new Performance test from Av-comparatives: http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/performance-tests
And even from there I can tell you that my own experience was different then from the results

Hope you understand what I meant ;)

EDIT:
Quote from AV-comparatives own site:
If you plan to buy an Anti-Virus, please visit the vendor's site and evaluate their software by downloading a trial version, as there are also many other features (e.g. firewall, HIPS, behaviorblocker, etc.) and important things (e.g. price, graphical user interface, compatibility, etc.) for an Anti-Virus that you should evaluate by yourself. Even if quite important, the data provided in the test reports on this site are just some aspects that you should consider when buying Anti-Virus software.

Ok turns out I hadent of updated Avast! (LOL?)
Even thought it said up-to-date, I learned you must right click on the program's taskbar icon and tell it to update.

I updated avast!, rebooted and done a full scan.
TURNS OUT, I had a trojan and rootkit still running.
The rootkit was in my SySWOW64 Drivers folder, and the trojan being a a fake winlogon.exe. I deleted both after the full system scan.

I think ill keep avast! as long as it last :D

It seemed to find two things that: Norton, MSE, Malwarebytes and superantispyware failed to detect!

Off topic: COMODO 4 is being worked on. Untrusted applications are ran in "sandbox" mode - Making it a super strong security program. The antivirus is expected to be MUCH better in terms of detection and not harm performance. Firewall isent expected to be tweeked much, as its already 99% perfect. A new, red interface looks very well on the new COMODO Internet Security Suit 4. Cant wait till the release.

Until COMODO 4, I will be staying with Avast! 5 Beta!
