It must be a difference between American English and the real thing

Well ... for my self ... I think it is a sign of good character and a balanced mind to be able to laugh at oneself. So make fun all you like. After all, if people didn't do laughable things once in a while, there would never have been: "America's Funniest Home Videos!" What a tragic loss that would have been.
