Superbar thumbnails flicker on hover, unable to use aer

Recently the thumbnail previews, when hovering over a task, seem to flicker on and then off. The thumbnail won't reappear unless I move the mouse over the same superbar item, but only for a second before disappearing again. I never have enough time to move my mouse over the thumbnail image and use aero peek to preview the window. I have already run the trouble shooting tool, "Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects." No problems are found, however. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

EDIT:
I have discovered that the peek at desktop feature works just fine. When I toggle, check or uncheck, the peek at desktop and then hover over a taskbar item, it works fine as well. As soon as I click anywhere on the screen, the thumbnails and peek go haywire, again. Toggling on or off the peek at desktop feature returns functionallity once
again, but as stated before, clicking anywhere causes the problem to return.

Thanks Brink.

However, those suggestions don't exactly fix the issue I've been having. The problem is that when I hold the pointer over a task on the task bar, the image flickers on and then off. I can't move my mouse over the thumbnail to preview the window because it disappears before I have a chance to hover over it to use peek. I've also noticed that when I hover over an item in Windows Explorer, say in my library and I hover my mouse over the Documents Library in the right pane, that when a tooltip comes up, it flickers on and then off. I think the issues are linked by hover. It's odd really. It was fine one day, and the next there it was.

This seems like a mouse bug or something, since it all relates to the mouse hovering.

Open up command prompt (run as admin) and type:
Code:
sfc /scannow

Post results.

Ah, that is all i needed. I don't need the details, just that it found corrupted files.

Repair install (as shawn said) is necessary.
If this cannot fix it, then you will need to reinstall.

I'm having exactly the same issue.

I've tried to change settings in regedit, no luck.

Also, I've run sfc \scannow and it says everything is working as it should.

Any other ideas over this?

This problem is a lot annoying, because these are the basis where Win7 works. When it flickers, I simply can't change the application/window, which makes the whole OS useless.

Hello Kika,

If you mean the flashing color there, then open the Ease of Access Center in the Control Panel, click on the Use text or visual alternatives for sounds link, and change the setting to none to stop the flashing.

Hope this helps,

Brink, thank you, but this is not the problem, the problem I have is when I click on those aero peek preview windows they flash and dissapear instead open programs from superbar and icons change color then. If it was just flashing, but I'm not able to open anything
edit: even if not clicking preview window but just icon on superbar, right or left mouse click, nothing happens.

seems I'm going to repair, did back up the network card driver, hope it will fix!

Problem Discovered

Greetings everyone,

I've pretty much given up on resolving the issue, I'm simply going back to my trusty Linux Distro. It never fails.

Anyhow, for documentation purposes, I've discovered that the issue is related to the video card driver, generic in this case. If I don't update the driver, the issue never arises but it limits me to a select few screen resolutions. Installing the driver causes the problem to arise.

This will remain an issue for some users, I imagine, but hopefully seeing some documentation to the problem will let them know they're not alone.

Best regards,

Alberto Garcia

I have the same problem also. I upgraded from Vista to Win 7 Pro, everything was working fine until a few days ago. The Aero Peek flashes for a second then goes away. Also the screen saver doesn't kick in or sleep or hibernate. I did a repair install, also uninstalled the video card driver and and put it back on, but still nothing. I did notice when I have the device manager screen open that peek will work with everything that is open. The only thing that was changed to the laptop is that I hooked it up to a TV through the VGA. Also I deleted the old files from Vista that were stored in C:\windows\old. Haven't touched the register.

Thanks in advance.

Hi people, this problem came back for me, so this time I took more time to investigate it and for me, it wasn't the graphic driver (Nvidia graphic card here). I had to re-install Logitech drivers for my mouse and what happend after that was 'Prevent Applications stealing focus' came permanently in-active and was impossible to enable and this caused the flickering. edit: the setting in registry is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop - ForegroundLockTimeout (set the value to 00030d40).
