I'm born above the Arctic Circle, in Lapland, Finland. We Finns, especially Lapps have a generations old drinking code. I'm happy and proud to say I've always found it very easy to follow this code, to drink only when the code allows it.

The Code:

• You should drink only when eating, and only when eating meat.
• If there's no meat available, it can be replaced with fish. Or poultry. Or vegetables. Or fruit.
• If there's no food available, you still have to nourish you, so drinking is then allowed as replacement for eating.

I only made a half day, already home enjoying one of the too rare days when it's almost mandatory to drink.

Promised to take mother-in-law to ice-cream and cappuccino today, have to remember to do it before there's too much whisky in my system.

For me, as a former drinker, today gives me the chance to pick up an extra day's work, so it's not exactly a celebration, but when you get paid by the hour, you can't turn down an extra day.
