Huge Processor Usage Problems

So I just installed Windows 7 last night, everything was running great, i got a bunch of new stuff installed, and everything was still working great. I decide to go to bed for a while and when I wake up there's a constant 60% of my processor being used and everything just goes crazy when I try to do things (like freezing, random flipping between pages, flashing). The only thing I can see is dwm.exe in processes pulling a 18-25 and a 20-30 on firefox and that's it. Does anyone know why processor usage is suddenly going crazy? (by the way physical memory usage is staying the same)

My processor usage with w7 is constantly not less than 80%. RAM stays a steady 50%

kill dwm and see if ff proc utilization drops
if so try the opposite, reboot but don't start ff, and make sure it's not running

if the cpu issue subsides then it's a ff issue

I've had problems with SearcFilterHost.exe and SearchProtocolHost.exe using 30% without any resulting disk activity for literally hours on end.

It always occurs after a few hours of uptime and can only be temporarily stopped by a reboot.

I stopped WinSAT and processor speed went back down to Vista-like levels (30% - 40%). How important is WinSAT?

How about you fill out your system profile so we can tell if that's 30% of Via C3 or Intel i7 and whether other system constraints are causing the OS to constantly work to maintain itself.

I agree with all the above. Also, a quick look at the processes in task manager should highlight which is using your CPU (see pic)

I am utterly surprise that you are experiencing 30-40% CPU usage - something is not right here.

At idle, I see no more than 2% usages at any given moment on any given core, and with the latest build. 7077, I am using less than 1/3 of my 4 GB of RAM.

You should start thoroughly checking your system to find the culprit - even my tablet PC with its load of stuff running idles less than 5% usage....

It's now at 20%-40%. Before I disabled WinSAT processor usage was at 90%-100%. Here's a snapshot of Task manager

Ummm, with you using Shareaza and μtorrent it is not hard to see why your processor usage is up there....

How about killing all unnecessary apps and *then* seeing what is going on? your system is not idling by any means in the state that it is in....

Without those 2 apps usage goes down to 6%......what I was really worried about anyway was the 90%-100% usage before I got rid of WINsat.

WINsat should not have been running in the background in the first place, so you had best figure out if you were trying to run a WEI test, or if it is in fact a piece of malware....

Sorry to jump in here but i am facing the same problem here. I have reinstalled Windows 7 RC1 Build 7100 4 times over the past week after the initial installation (and after telling the OS that i have 2 cores not 1) the CPU idles at about 3-5% but after that it jumps to 100% (thats before i install anything).

After viewing the forums and going over what has been placed to look out for it seems to be that the svchost.exe (LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) CPU useage: 35% +, svchost.exe (LocalServiceNoNetwork) CPU useage: 20% + and svchost.exe (secsvcs) CPU useage: 10% +, are the culprits.

Is there likely to be any kind of fix for this as i have read (not jsut here but on other forums as well) that this is a wide spread problem? I know restarting the PC will 'fix' it temporarely but when it shoots straight back up to 100% CPU useage after about 30 seconds - 1 minute uptime something must be wrong... any Ideas in the mean time?

DD

Here's a tutorial that will show you how to get you computer to use 0% CPU and 0% RAM:

1)Start up your computer and log into Windows.
2)Once your Hard Disk slows down, and Windows is ready, hold the button that has a circle with line going through it, partly. It is located somewhere on the face of your laptop, or on the front of your desktop.
3)The screen should go black and there should be no lights on.

Congratulations, your computer is now using 0% CPU and 0% RAM!

Obviously, that's a joke. I would suggest killing a few unneccesary tasks or services.

I call it the craptop.
svchost is a generic Windows process - It could be any number of applications using it. Please download and investigate using Process Explorer (basically Process Manager on some pretty good steriods) Process Explorer It should go a long way towards narrowiung down the real culprit.
