Need Router help

While waiting for a reply I saw this .. on choosing a password for this location..Utilities> System Settings below.
Administrator Password
The Router ships with NO password entered. If you wish to add a password for more security, you can set a password here. Keep your password in a safe place, as you will need this password if you need to log into the router in the future. It is also recommended that you set a password if you plan to use the Remote management feature of this Router.

The login timeout option allows you to set the period of time that you can be logged into the Router's advanced setup interface. The timer starts when there has been no activity. For example, you have made some changes in the advanced setup interface, then left your computer alone without clicking "Logout". Assuming the timeout is set to 10 minutes, then 10 minutes after you leave, the login session will expire. You will have to login to the router again to make any more changes. The login timeout option is for security purposes and the default is set to 10 minutes. As a note, only one computer can be logged into the Router's advanced setup interface at one time.

Mine doesn't look like that..
I used to have that red top house..
In the 1st place on the left I see the OLD.. Georgia-Pc icon...
looks like a pc ..
to the right of the icon... is a LINE with a RED X sitting on the top..
to the right of the red X the line continues.. to what looks like grayed out .. Internet Icon

I looked around while waiting your reply.. on my network map it tells me the adapter is NOT connected.

When looking at your "Network and Sharing Center", what does it say where the arrow is pointing?

OK ... do you see the "Manage Wireless Networks" to the left of what we are looking at now? If so click on that, then right click on the wireless network and select "Properties" and find the "Security Tab". I have two screen shots above for you to look at.

See if you can make sure the "Security Tab" is set to WPA2-Personal.

OK but we are using WPA2-Personal, not WPA-Personal

Click the drop down box and select WPA2-Personal. Re-enter YOUR "Key Phrase". You might need to restart the laptop.

The one other major issue that might block Internet access for you here is your Anti-Virus / Firewall. If changing to WPA2 does not restore Internet connection, try disabling the Anti-Virus or Firewall or both to see if that helps?

It is late for me, so I will see how things go for you tomorrow.

Good night!

That is great news! A very encouraging step forward!

Based on the last info you posted about laptop settings, it is set to use WPA-Personal whereas the router is set to WPA2-Personal, and using a different KEY passphrase or password. So until The laptop is set the same as the router and both have the same KEY passphrase or password, a secure wireless connection is not possible.

Cheers!
Robert

I've suggested that LPT remove all existing wireless networks from the laptop and set up an unsecured network to prove the connectivity - before setting up wp2-psk security

just keeping you in the loop ;) :D

That is a great idea. That could expose other blocks to connection like anti-virus, firewall, and pop-up blockers. I think what LPT and I accomplished the most, was to give her some familiarity with the pages in the router and see how to get there and how to make needed adjustments. With every step she is proving she is competent and can do this.

Good luck!

iseeyou. and Nigel I'm so greatful to you both.. I so want this to get corrected..
other people have made this work.. I know beyond a doubt this can be accomplished.. it is time consuming .. at best.. But it will work one way or another..
Barman did you get a peek at the last screen shot I left on this thread?
Thank you both ever so much.

I see nothing about Motherboard info.
I'm not sure about Sound Card
Ports :(3) USB 2.0, (1) HDMI, (1) VGA, (1) Headphone out, (1) Microphone in, (1) Ethernet LAN

•Fast Wi-Fi wireless and wired Gigabit Ethernet networking
•HDMI output
•Kensington lock slot
I have no idea what all this actually means
When looking at your "Network and Sharing Center", what does it say where the arrow is pointing?

I suspected it might. We will want to change that, eventually, and Barman can show you how later. It is in your best interest to follow one adviser at a time and only make one change at a time. So for now, as Barman is intent on diagnosing the wireless connection, stay with that process until solved before going on to something else.
