Very weird......HD movies stutter

Hello!

Not really sure where to post about this, but 7 forums seems like a good place!

Recently i have been watching HD movies on my laptop, i noticed however that it stutters quite a lot, i have been using VLC player and i was told its not so good for mkv files so have tried zoomplayer... no better.

Heres the weird part...
As im writing this i have a friend watching an HD movie on my laptop behind me and every now and then it stutters as usual (very annoying), now i am sitting about 2m away browsing on the internet and i have noticed that every time the laptop stutters my desktop does as well. Whether im just moving the mouse (it hangs) or typing, the computer just freezes for about half a second and then carrys on as normal, the only reason i noticed was because my computer freezes/hangs for the same period of time (no more than half a second) at exactly the same time...

Both computers are on the same network, but i dont see how that should effect it, other than that they are not connected at all, it happens when the laptop is on battery power too.

If i can stop whatever is causing the stuttering then i can happily watch HD movies...

Any ideas?

My desktop is connected via ethernet to a router, and the laptop is connected to a wirelss access point which is connected via ethernet to the router.
I have tried disabling the wifi, and the stutters still happen at the same time... Could it be some sort of interference?

Are the movie files stored locally on the respective computer or are they on a network share?

If the movie on your laptop that your friend is watching was on your computer and he was accessing it across the network, then that would definitely affect both computers.

Also, you are both using a single connection to the internet, so if there is a file download or streaming or an update downloading for Windows, Java, Flash, antivirus, etc., it will affect all computers' Internet access simultaneously, locking them up so to speak...

Actually, Windows 7 is supposed to help this situation, keeping busy applications corralled so all applications don't freeze. Are you using Windows 7?

Don't know about the synchronized stuttering, but for .mkv playback, esp. if wide ranging subtitle support is not a requirement, try Splash Lite. They just released 1.4. It's the only player I've used where I can move the slider with impunity without crashing while playing .mkv.

i get no stutter at all with Windows Media Player 12, even on low RAM or weak processor machines.

What files it can't play I use VLC player which is fine also.

I liked VLC for a long time. With .mkv though, most often, if I touch the slider, it just goes away. Sometimes it will play until it gets to the point where there's a PGS sub going to display. At that moment, it goes away. Mkv/PGS support has a long way to go.

The movie is stored locally on the laptop, no streaming. I have tried unplugging the laptop from the mains and turning the wifi off and still the stutters occur at the same time on both machines... I dont live in the city, but could there be any outside interference?

Thanks for the info on splash, shame it doesnt do subtitles for films like 2012 where theres a lot of different languages!

Either that or it's one of those quantum thingies where observing reality changes it. Just don't watch the video and I bet it won't flicker at all!

We should Hector them to expand the subtitle support. I've already nagged them twice about it on their forum:

@MilesAhead:

Where'd you get that "violent" smiley? It's not in the full list.
Are there more "undocumented"?

You find a lot of nice ones on this site:

3D Medium size emoticons and animated smileys - Smileys.Smilchat.net 3200 free smilies and 5 chatrooms

But to use them on this board you have to paste the url into the Upload Attachments thingy, then use the paperclip in the toolbar to insert it. Just right click the smiley and do Save Url or Save Image Location whatever. Then paste it into the upload input line.
