Unknown crash - no warning

I'm having this problem where my computer occasionally shuts itself off shortly after hitting the desktop. My monitor just goes to standby mode - no blue screen that I could tell. I haven't installed anything new.

My whole computer is still running, fans, LEDs everything. It's as if the computer just decided to go to standby mode. I can't wake it either. I can't tell if the computer is actually on. It's not my monitor - it's occurred with other monitors as well.

Q6600/W7 x64/2x2GB DDR2/80GB SSD boot, 640GB HDD

Any ideas?

-Edit- I noticed that this "Stickies" program I use to post notes on my desktop completely disappeared. All notes were wiped from my system after this most recent set of crashing.

does it do the same thing when you boot into safe mode (F8)?

I can't seem to replicate this problem consistently, actually. I turn my computer on once a day, and this problem happens maybe twice a week? It's bizarre.

I suppose that would point towards hardware failure?
