It depends on what you mean by 'gaming'.

If that means newer titles (l2006>current) then $250-$300 for an entire setup simply is not enough. Sorry.

Even for a low end AMD based rig you'd be looking at $500 minimum.

Have you considered a 2nd hand machine? Even then, $250-$300 wouldn't get you much.


Is this just the tower, or are you hoping for a monitor included in that price too?

@Reilly to be honest if you want a decent gamming system with atleast a hd 5670 1gb graphics card runs about $139.00 your system should be atleast $ 600 dollars american and that is just for a decent desktop nothing fancy processor is about $150 to $160 atleast 4 gigs of ram which is about $99 to $120 a new hdd about $60 that would get you atleast 500gb a decent mobo from about $99 to $120 atleast to have some sort of features and a psu from $79 to $90 atleast 600 to 650 watt to assure power and have atleast 2 pci-e conncetions for further upgrades

now if you have a dvd drive and maybe the old hhd may still be of some use \but the pricing and rages i given are just a speculation of what atleast a decent running gaming system should amount too

Do you have any other reusable parts - ie Hard Drives, power supply etc?

Can you build it yourself, or are you hoping for a pre-built machine?

If you can do it yourself, that will lower the cost.


Also, if time permits - is it feasible to save up and buy parts as funds become available? (which unfortunately means waiting longer for a new PC)

From a sheer budget perspective, I'd be looking at an AMD system rather than intel - because AMD is an overall better 'bang for buck' setup. Unfortunately, as already mentioned, $250-$300 will not get you all that close to a 'decent gaming machine'.

For a 22" 1680x1050 monitor, you don't need an uber powerful video card, which helps keep the cost down. So too does the need for a more powerful PSU.

But still, you'd need to factor in the cost of a motherboard + RAM + CPU which will exceed the $300 budget for those components alone.

It will save you a bit if you pick parts wisely. It will be a MUCH higher quality though, for sure.

The price will vary - it depends on where you purchase from. A very rough ballpark figure could be anywhere from $50-$200.

Desktop. Building your own laptop is extremely difficult (in comparison) and much harder to find parts.
