Guru's please read! PC continuously reboots...

Hello there all,

I have a very irritating problem on my hands which is very peculiar...

I have a fresh install of windows 7 ultimate. But... hehe.. MY PC KEEPS REBOOTING RANDOMLY! Its gotten to the point now where im about to throw it out the window. I could be doing anything and it will just all of a sudden reboot.

And to top it off, it reboots about 5-6 times after the bios has done its check, then reboots and goes back to the start of the check in bios.. then eventually it starts up. There is no set time that it starts rebooting. It does this at totally random intervals.

A friend of mine who deals in IT, thought it may just be the case that is causing something to go wonky. So we took it out the case, and booted the pc up. Low and behold.. it never rebooted once. So, we assumed it was the case giving problems. We then put it into another case.

We assumed the problem was solved, but it wasnt?!

We checked all of the following and tested:

Ram
CPU
Fans
Hard drives
All power cables
Power pack (550 w)

Im running out of ideas here? IF anyone could give some useful information, please help. Im unsure if this is a hardware or software issue, but i am sure it is hardware. Its a fresh install of win7, and anti virus is running. So its doubtful its a virus.

Thanks in advance

Hi Sinobiah, when you took the mobo etc out of the case , did you take out all the hardware and devices ? If not and you only took the essentials out ,check what was left in the case it may be causing a short somewhere ;)

Hi there..

Yes we did. The case was barebone except for the little cables for the box's extra USB devices. Also, unchecked the automatically restart after system failure thingy... but it still restarts

Sinobiah, remove everything except ram and graphics card and HDD ,so you are running on the bare essentials ,if ity boots ok and no BSODs add the remaining devices 1 by 1 and see which is the culprit :)

Sometimes there is a setting in the Bios for auto reboot on power failure. Make sure that is turned OFF for now until the exact problem is isolated & solved.

Either something is causing an intermittent short or you have an inadequate power supply..

I HIGHLY doubt that as the power supply is 550 W.

Please list your power supply so we can check the specs on it. Also it's not so much the wattage that counts as it is the amps on the +12v rail(s).
I ask because i see that your running 5 hard drives. Thanks. Fabe

Don't be so sure of that. The original PSU in my system was 750w, and 2 hours of prime95 destroyed it

I agree that random reboots usually relate to a power supply issue, total output has nothing to do with it.

The Op asked for advice then doubts the good advice he recieves is true? Random reboots and power supply issues usually go hand in hand so the advice is sound.

In this case trying a different power supply is the first thing I would try, although the system working outside of the box but not inside the box might point to another problem, shorted board or loose connections, maybe try a different sata cable.

The system working outside of the box, but not in it, is what hardens my belief that it's purely an electrical problem, not a software problem. It's quite possible that it's an inadequate power supply but more likely to be an intermittent short.. but beyond my ability to diagnose sight unseen

About the power pack, i did mention that we tested it. What i forgot to mention was that we tested it with a different power pack too, and the problem persisted.

It was only when we took it out the case that the problem stopped. Even when putting it into a different case to the old one, the problem then returned. Im not sure what the error message above means.

The reason that i doubted it was because i forgot to mention that we had previously tested the essentials etc with a different power supply. That was one of the first things that came to mind, was that the power supply might have had a bad connection somewhere, or that it was shorting somewhere causing the pc to randomly reboot.

As i said before, i am totally unsure if there is a hardware or software issue. But i am sure the error message i posted about 3 posts back will be useful?

Here are more details to the problem:

When my pc goes into sleep mode (when you have to move either the mouse or tap a key on the keyboard to get it running again), it reboots almost every single time i try "wake it up" so to speak.

Also, when i open applications, or just do random things, it reboots. Then goes into bios as if it were starting up... Then reboots a few times before getting to the windows logon screen.

Another bit of info is that i am using both SATA and IDE drives in my pc.

Yet more info:

Just before it reboots, i hear one of the drives making a sound as if it is starting or booting up then.. crash.

Sorry for typing half an essay... but the more info i give here, the better.

What kind of cooling system you using? Passive or Active? The reason I ask is I had a similar issue and it turned out to be excess heat.

Just a thought.

Check the flow of air in your system. the fans may not be circulating the air properly and causing the cpu to overheat. i suggest get some cpu monitoring software and check that its still running cool
