    No signal issue

    Hi all,

wish my first post wasn't an issue, but cant work this one out.

My housemate's computer has been doing strange things recently but now seems to have fallen over.

About 2 months ago I helped him upgrade his GPU to a PNY GT 240 (I did mine at the same time so we have identical cards.) Install went fine and everything ran smooth. Then a month ago he started to have an issue. The system would boot up normally until the windows logo, then the screen would go 'no signal'. I managed to get it to boot into safe mode fine and did a restore to before his last windows update and all seemed normal again.

Last night he went to turn on the system and nothing happened. He just gets 'no signal' right from the start. The post noise plays but nothing appears.

First I checked cables were secure, and tried with an alternative monitor & cable, but no luck. So I thought the graphics card might have died, I put it into my computer and the boot on my system went fine. I then put my card back in and then swapped his HDD with mine into my system to see if it was windows. The boot still went fine.

I reassembled his system, but nothing. There is still no display.

    Any ideas?

you could check the bios make sure the pcie slot is selected as primary for graphics , his mobo could be faulty? Have you made sure the monitor is ok?

If your systems are alike I'd do a systematic one at a time swap from his PC to yours to see if you have a hardware failure, GPU, RAM, Sound Card if applicable, hard drive, CD/DVD, cables etc. if your PC boots normally we can assume the mobo is probably at fault. Obviously if you can swap his stuff into your PC and it doesn't boot with an item you'll have your answer.

Pretty much what I was thinking, I will keep going with everything. I wont be able to swap the CPU or MB for obvious reasons. I cant check Bios as there is no display at all anymore. Nothing comes up on screen.

I will report back with my findings. Any other suggestions or Thoughts I will check.

I would not do the CPU and Mobo, I think just the associated hardware and cables will tell you, of course you could do it the other way also, i.e. start with your hard drive in his PC, then GPU then RAM, if everything is still black screened I would think you have a Mobo issue but to be safe pop his monitor on your PC but I'm thinking the monitor is not the issue.
