Run the drivers in compatibility mode. Hopefully, that will work.

Well, when you do have access to it, run it in compatibility mode for Vista (or XP, depending on which one you downloaded it).

I was able to get RC 7100 to somewhat detect my X300 correctly and run Aero with a score of 2.0 (at one point it was 3.4??!!). Here's what I did:

    1. Download Mobility Modder.

    2. Download Catalyst 8.12. Extract the drivers, but don't install. Just cancel after extraction.

    3. Run Mobility Modder as the instructions on the page says. Click the 'Disable UAC' checkbox. Your laptop will restart, and Mobility Modder will open automatically.

    4. Browse to the extraction location and click Modify.

    5. Once it's done install the drivers. You should get a message that tells you the drivers are not compatible or signed, but install anyway.

    6. A message should pop up telling you to restart. After that run WEI, and it should be able to detect you card.

You may be able to do this with newer drivers. I tried with 9.3 or 9.4, but it didn't work. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 just like you. Hope this helps.

I tried Dell x300 drivers for XP in compatibility mode and also Mobility Modder + Omega drivers on a clean Windows 7 install, but neither worked well with x264 playback (CCCP+CoreAVC usually, though I tried other options.) Subsequently, I did pretty well by clean-installing Vista, accepting the Windows Update ATI drivers (twice), and then upgrade-installing Windows 7 (7100). I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with ATI x300 64MB (32MB dedicated.) WEI is 2.0. Aero is slow, so I turned it off.

Although I'm satisfied now, my major remaining complaint is some tearing in x264 playback on high motion scenes. I was thinking of retreating to Windows XP to fix that, but it seems this was a bug in the ATI 9.2 Catalyst drivers and so maybe eventually there will be a Windows Update version to fix it. I'm not sure what ATI Catalyst version these Windows Update drivers correspond to, but they are listed as driver 8.360.0.0 date 3/14/2007.

Also, Windows Media Center does not work; full screen gives a black screen.

Anyone got x264 without tearing or Media Center working in Windows 7 with an Inspiron 6000?

I fixed my problem with tearing on 720p mkv playback. I had Aero disabled, and it turns out that if you have Aero disabled in Windows 7 or Vista, then it also disables EVR, and you get tearing as a result. I get some dropped frames now, but I much prefer dropped frames over tearing. Phew, I was just about to revert to XP, but now mkv's look beautiful under Windows 7 on my Inspiron 6000.

@Mikaelft: Yeah, everybody else got the Radeon X300 to work with Windows 7. Didn't you try the Windows Update drivers? But for mobiltymodder, there's a new ATI Catalyst out in the last few days, and I installed that fine. (It didn't work with the version around June, which is now a known bug.)
