Right.

And a "display adapter" should be present in Device manager, even if it's using the generic VGA drivers.

It is possible that that chipset requires the Hyperion 4-in-1 instead of the Pro, one reason I wanted to see what I could find on Via's site (which still won't load for me).

Let's double check/confirm what is on there. Grab this,

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

and post a screen shot of the motherboard tab please.

Unless it is being mis-identified due to improper drivers, that confirms what Speccy said. And Bob you're right in that it is from a barebones system Asus, unfortunately I keep finding it mentioned in a couple of them only I can't find them on Asus' site. A couple of links I came across said the Vintage AE1, only problem with that one is I can find it on Asus's site but it came with a SiS based board and not this A8V-MQ. I also came across this from Xbit,

Chipsets: Latest VIA’s Plans - X-bit labs

that mentions it as well. That that article is from 2002 may explain why we can't find much about it.

All that said seeing as I can't get Via's site to load still give this,

ViaAGP.zip

a try. It is from a similar MSI based board and is just the AGP driver, and according to the MSI download page also supposed to support Vista. There is no installer so you will have to install it manually,

1. Unip it, then open Device Manager.

2. Look under System Devices for the AGP driver, may also be listed as GART.

3. Right click and select Update Driver, then click on Browse

4. Select "let me choose" and navigate to the extracted folder and point it to the INF, then click on Update.

Hopefully that will get the AGP driver installed and then allow the Nvidia driver to install. Before doing the above have a quick look in Programs and Features and see if the Hyerion Pro drivers are listed and if they are, uninstall them first.

Try System Devices, not USB Controllers.
