Nvidia 8400M GT with Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Hello! I am new to the forums. :)

I recently upgraded my Sony Vaio laptop to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 but I am having trouble installing the video card driver for my 8400M GT card. The installer tells me that the installer cannot find any drivers compaible with my current hardware. I really need to install my video card for this computer. Thanks alot guys!

    Welcome to the Forum Pega57.

I've gotten that message when I am trying to install an nVidia divers package from download onto a computer on which I have uninstalled the current drivers and cleaned up thoroughly in Safe mode.

If you try and install the nVidia drivers before you have rebooted and allowed Windows to Install it's generic WDDM1.1 driver you get that message.

    The proper procedure is to
1)remove the old drivers and video card software,
    2) restart the computer - at the desktop you will be asked to install the generic Windows driver (or it will install automatically - depending on your settings),
    3) after it installs you will be asked to restart again - do so,
    4) once back on the desktop you can now install the nVidia package.

Let us know if there is something different about your issue.

Welcome to SevenForums. Some of the time Sony or other OEM manufacturers modify their .inf file. So you will need to go to the Sony site for the graphics driver.

Their are also a couple other ways to get the driver directly from Nvidia to install.
    1. Is to use Nvidia mobile modder, it's a fairly straight forward program and easy to use. Download the latest driver for your card, go to step #4. and follow the directions, the modder tool can be downloaded at the bottom of the page. NVIDIA MobilityModder

As mentioned above un-install any driver already installed, you also might want to run driver sweeper to remove any residual files left over after the un-install instructions Guru3D - Driver Sweeper Download Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from Guru3D.com

Please post back so we know if this has helped or if you need further instructions as their are some other methods.

I also like to add that whenever I install a new driver or app, I like to create a restore point before. This way you can easily resore your system to it's previous state rather easily, if for some reason you run into problems or you don't like the new driver or app. Fabe

Thanks for the welcome! May you please give me a descriptive procedure on how to install the Nvidia driver please? I don't really know much on computer terms so I might need some clarification. Thanks!

If you go to the Sony site and enter your model number>select drivers and software downloads>in the box operating system select windows Seven 64 bit(if not available use Vista 64 bit) find the video card driver in the list of drivers, you may need t expand the column.( if you would provide your model # we could find it for you)download and save to your desktop.

If they have a Windows 7 64 bit driver, download it>unpack it if zipped> click on the setup.exe file and let install.

If their is only a Vista 64 bit driver you will have to unpack it>right click on the setup. exe file> then properties>click the compatibility tab> check the box run in compatibility mode> in the drop down menu just below the box select Vista>at the bottom of that page check the box run as administrator> click the setup.exe file and let install.

As I mentioned above Sony has a habit of modifying their video card .inf file so you usually have to go to Sony for your driver especially on a laptop.

Please provide your model number so we can look it up and have a better idea of what your going to need to do to get it installed. Thanks. Fabe

Have you tried the Nvidia Drivers at NVIDIA & Laptop News | Latest NVIDIA drivers and related news | laptopvideo2go.com along with their Modded INFs? They generally fix the problem of mobile chipsets not being recognized.

I'm assuming you tried to install that driver and that is probably a Vista 32 bit driver. For your Sony Model # VGN-Ar605E laptop. It says it came with Vista Home Premium but not if it was 32 or 64 bit. If the driver won't install in compatibility mode Vista then it's a 32 bit driver.

So if you can go to device manager>right click on the camera>detials tab> drop down menu> hardware id>Copy and Paste the hardware id string and we can see if we can find a 64bit driver for it.

Or you can try this driver but I found but it also may ne a 32 bit driver. RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting click on free user then wait for the clock to count down>then download.Unzip and folow install with compatibility mode Compatibility Mode

If it won't install you'll need to post the hardware id string to help with the search for a 64bit driver. Thanks. Fabe
