What kind of budget are you looking at? That will help a great deal.

Will get different opinions here but:

If you plan on gaming, the Nvidia card is certainly the better of the 2.

(Although personally prefer ATI and would get a more powerful ATI card, thats just preference)

Usually, AMD builds are the better way to go for a budget build.
Intel will perform better, even at slower clock speeds, but cost more.

If you can find a good deal on a Intel build, that would be the route I would take. (Again preference though)

Between the two here, I think you'd be better off with a core i5 build TBH, since your building a new machine.

If you want to try and build cheaper, AMD may be a better alternative.


Also, please remember the PSU. Do not get a cheap one here.
I would highly reccomend something like a Corsair PSU.

Thats a 450W 33Amp PSU, and should be enough for what you thinking about.

However, moving up to a 550W may be a good idea for future growth.


Just a couple things to look at and consider, although you will get plenty more different & good suggestions here.

When it comes to selecting Ram for your setup, I usually refer you to your motherboard manufacturers site to download the manual for your board. It usually includes a QVL which is a Qualified Vendors list of reccomended Ram modules for your board.
This list is usually comprised of Ram that has been tested with your board and found to run at the rated specs without any issues. Support & Downloads - GIGABYTE

I was thinking the OP was refering to the Nvidia 460 and I see now it was in fact a 260.

The GTX 460 would be a better choice I think, like this one:

There are also some more versions a little more expensive, but they are all about the same price.

If you want to stay with a P43 or P45 socket 775, look into something like a E8400s.

Also, with the socket 775 boards, most support only DDR2 memory.
A few however will support DDR3. Need to be sure.

Something else to consider.
A socket 1156 board will cost about the same as the DDR3 P45 boards.

P43 boards may be a bit cheaper, but by only $40 or so. Rough estimate.
The CPUs themselves are about the same in price.

If you are building from scratch, it may be worth considering just spending an extra 40-50 $$ and go with the newer tech.

Socket 775 makes the most sense if upgrading some of the current hardware.
(IE CPU only, or MOBO only)
