Just a thought, to the OP and @Zidane

Instead of going through the sordid long job of reinstalling windows, could Driver Sweeper be used instead.

Download here - Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

If unsure how to use, download and install, uninstall Nvidia drivers like normal, restart in to safe mode, run Driver sweeper, un-tick everything except Nvidia drivers and Nvidia Physx and click 'analyse' and then when ready click 'clean'

Just a thought,

Lucky

At this point anything couldn't really hurt. Not sure 100% if it will work but worth a try seeing as NOTHING I have tried has worked to resolve this issue (and I am extremely profficent in drivers so....I know it isn't me...not being big-headed here)

No worries, i hav'nt been thrugh the same issue but i tend to do this if the drivers are playing funny buggers.

I am not being big headed either jumping in with the idea. just thought it might help before taking that god forsaken job of reinstalling everything.

Indeed true....I wish the OP all the luck in the world with this issue and hope NVIDIA decides to fix it eventually....

windows 64bit

My dad's machine is having the same problem. The 9800GT out of the blue (no driver updates, etc) just stopped being detected - shows up as generic VGA. He detected this when he went to play a game and it wouldn't run, so I came over to look at it.

Popped in a Geforce 460GTX that I know works and same problem.

Tried installing the drivers that were previously functioning (about 4-5 months old) and in the setup it says "no compatible cards detected". Downloaded the latest (non-beta) drivers from Nvidia, same thing.

plugged both cards into another box and they work fine.

So I'm thinking motherboard issue? dunno, as nothing else changed when the original card stopped working.

power supply is an 800W OCZ and about 2 months old.

machine in question is running Windows 7 home premium, 64-bit.

Any thoughts?

thanks

nVidia card not detected on re-install!
I had to reinstall 7100 - don't ask! - and I had to force the system to think it was a 8400M as it got installed as Standard VGA card. The problem is that running nVidia new driver just gives 'compatible device not detected' type error. What is going on? Everything was fine before. Any ideas?
