if my monitor has an HDMI input, but no speakers.. it will route the sound out through the onboard sound still correct?
Yes the sound still comes out the normal sound card outputs.
Assuming that Windows hasn't chosen to set the HDMI audio to default. If you find you have no sound but your on-baord audio is enabled, check the sound panel....
