W7U/x64 + nVidia8500GT Random switching from Digital to analog

Hi everyone, New to the forums.

Everything was fine when I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 until upgraded to latest nVidia driver for my 8500GT - the problem is that randomly every 10 to 40 minutes (varies greatly) there is an error sound and my monitor goes to power saving mode. If I then press the "source" button and switch to analog (both analog and DVI are connected to one monitor) then I can see whats going on but the resolution is all wrong. and it keeps switching back and forth between the two at random intervals - very annoying as you can imagine.
*I have tried rolling back the driver - same problem.
*I have tried completely removing the 8500GT from the device manager, restarting, and reinstalling it. Letting windows choose the most appropriate driver - Same problem occurs.

any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
Sam

Animus1539, welcome to the Seven Forums.

First thing would be to roll back the driver update. Unless the driver update addresses a problem you may be having, I would just leave it alone.

Second,

Stupid question time, but why? Use one or the other, not both.

Thanks Stormy

OK. As I stated in my first post, I have already tried rolling back the driver, but the same problem continues now regardless of the driver version installed at the time.

to your second point, I realize it may be a bit strange to have them both connected to the same monitor on the one hand, but on the other hand, I wouldn't know what the problem was if for instance only the DVI were connected...

Plus I'm pretty sure it has a software background to the problem since it doesn't crash completely and Windows gives a malfunction "sound"...

still at this point I'm willing to try anything...

I think you will find that you created your own problem by having both the DVI and VGA connections going to one monitor, use one or the other.

One way to find out is to not use the hardware in a way it wasn't intended to be used.

No progress despite advice

writing in from my office computer since I can no longer access my home machine... I have updated to the latest driver from nVidia and installed it with just DVI connected to monitor, everything was fine for about 24 hours. then suddenly the same thing happens and it switches the monitor to power saving mode - but now I cannot access the computer - even after restart it goes directly to power saving mode...

Have you checked the settings on the monitor itself? What is the default input source?

Time to test if it is the card or the monitor.

1. Use only one connection (DVI or VGA), and see if it still happens.

2. If it still happens use the other connection.

3. If it is till happening seeing as the motherboard listed in your specs has onboard video (Intel 965G), pull the video card and use the onboard video. Again only one connection.

If it comes down to #3 and the problem stops, then there is a good chance that video card has gone bad.
