AMD Radeon HD 6950 to HD 6970 Mod

A few weeks ago AMD released the Radeon HD 6970 and Radeon HD 6950. Both cards are based on AMD's new Cayman core which is their first graphics processor to use a VLIW4 shader configuration.

Just like on all other similar products, AMD's two Cayman variants, called Cayman Pro and Cayman XT, are based on the exact same GPU silicon. The model variant a GPU chip becomes is decided after the die is produced, at some point before it is put on the card. Creating new SKUs from the same silicon by locking features has been common practice in the industry since at least the Radeon 9500 in 2002.

This article is to unlock the Radeon HD 6950. The HD 6970 has nothing that can be unlocked.

AGUY since you posted this would you happen to know if the 6870 cards have any thing locked on it that can be unlocked or is it just the two above mentioned

I find this kinda interesting based on the fact i have heard of people unlocking features on nvidia cards that upped the performance to a different card callibur as example gtx 460-465 turned to a gtx 470

I just want a better understanding on this plus my lack of knowledge on this so i would be apreciated if you have some answers or even a direction to start with

    Thanks in advanced AGUY .....

I can't say for sure, but I'd think nothing to be unlocked, as it would be the 6850 that would have the capability to be unlocked to be like a 6870. Just an assumption. A Guy

Bahh, still not tempted enough to get one of these 6900 series cards.

It's AA performance lags way behind Fermi based cards.

In fact, under BFBC2, which is where I spend most of my gaming time on, their min FPS (both 6950 and 6970) are not that different from my GTX 470.

Sticking with my GTX 470 until GTX 570s start dropping into the low ~$300 range.

I sorta figured that since i have the full scale model of that series

for now i am very happy with my choice but the drivers are another issue 10.12 is a dud so right now i am useing 10.10 there getting the job done as for the others i kept getting a system crash so after i got rid of it im running problem free again
